Reporting to the Systems Manager, the Network Engineer will be primarily responsible for providing network and operating systemsâ support to staff including managing network, server operation, performing routine maintenance and repair work on network

⢠Participates in installing, upgrading, operation, control, maintenance and effective use of local and wide area networks for the communication of data, (and possibly voice, text or images) within one or more information systems. Includes carrying out surveys to establish network connection requirements, performing routine configuration/installation and reconfiguration of hardware and software;
⢠Monitors and reviews network traffic, the performance and quality of service provided by the network and its constituent hardware, software, transmission services and support functions. Includes using network management systems software and appropriate analysis equipment to collect routine network load statistics, model performance, and creating reports;
⢠Troubleshoots and resolves network problems. Includes using network management tools to investigate, diagnose and resolve network problems within service level agreement tolerances, the needs for quality, security, availability and safety, utilizing appropriate specialized techniques, tools, methods or standards. Refers to network users, other staff, and suppliers, as necessary;
⢠Uses standard procedures to carry out defined tasks related to planning, installation, upgrade, operation, control and maintenance of local and wide area networks. Includes assisting in reviewing and analyzing network costs, collecting network and system performance data for internal report, preparing network statistics, identifying trends in traffic flow and levels of service;
⢠Administers WAN and network services through providing server access, charge-backs and troubleshooting. Includes monitoring and troubleshooting LAN and WAN connections, monitoring bandwidth use, analyzing network traffic patterns and volumes and ensuring availability. Monitor and tune the network environment for optimal performance.
⢠Acts as front-line interface to users and provides basic day-to-day PC maintenance and support and responds to users requests for assistance. Includes by logging calls for relevant network equipment, investigating problems and other requests for support, noting problems, assisting in the corrective action and monitoring progress of requests for support;
⢠Manages and perform first level hardware support activities. Includes investigating, diagnosing, deciding course of action and resolving computer hardware problems for users. Tests and verifies hardware and support peripherals to ensure that they meet specifications and requirements. Analyzes and document area of business equipments in terms of hardware.
⢠Identifies potential exposures to application systems critical to the continuity of Councilâs business. Identifies the need for the creation, testing and maintenance of an information systems disaster recovery plan to agreed standards and assists in maintaining the continuity of application systems critical to the Councilâs existence to a level agreed
⢠Provides daily feedback to the relevant support co-coordinator via the reporting system or e-mail.
⢠Maintains auditable records and user documentation for rendered services.
⢠Assists IT management in defining needs for new access rights and privileges, operates and administers logical access controls relating to one or more platforms in order to provide a continuous and secure access service to IT facilities. Maintains auditable records and user documentation for all services and systems within IT Security Management;
⢠Assists in installing or removing items of software (typically desk-top items); finds the necessary items and checks that these are as described in the instructions or plans. Follow agreed standards, including where appropriate, those for electrical work. Assists in conducting tests of the software affected using supplied test procedures and diagnostic tools. Contributes, as required, to investigations of problems and faults concerning the installation of software;
⢠Contributes to the production of schedules for managing mirror release to live infrastructure. Transcribes data on to the release management database, ensuring accuracy and consistency of data. Attends to simple enquiries on the status of new releases, using the release management database where appropriate; |
