Position Summary :
We are looking for an
Associate Director, Medical Affairs position to be responsible for the Hospital
Care medical team in the Gulf countries. The Associate Medical Director is a
non-promotional role which leads a team of Medical Advisors/MSLs who engage in
scientific exchange with healthcare professionals and scientists (HCPs), with
emphasis on regional and national scientific leaders and key decision makers.
The Associate Medical
Director is responsible for the team s scientific activities and performance. Also
he will lead the Hospital Care Medical team assigned to given therapeutic
areas. Although the Medical Advisor is the owner of the strategic plan, the Associate
Medical Director may also provide input and insight based on his/her team
interaction with their SLs and other stakeholders engagements into the Medical
Affairs strategy and ensure that it translates into concrete engagement
(action) plans in the field.
The Associate Medical
Director may also represent MSD in a range of local, national and international
non-promotional Medical Affairs activities.
The job duties include
the following:
• He/She will be
responsible of a therapy area by himself/herself within the assigned
geographical territory by the country Medical Director.
• Ensures that each team
member has an assigned geographic territory and/or therapy area that is
strategically aligned with the Medical Affairs Plan.
• Ensures that each
member of his team is aware of all SL/KDM in his/her territory.
• Budget Planning and
Resource Management.
• Hires, manages,
coaches and develops a group of Medical Adviors/MSLs assigned to his/her
therapeutic areas to ensure the highest quality scientific exchange in
alignment with the Medical Affairs plan.
• Performs observational
field visits with each Medical Advisor/MSL in his/her therapeutic areas as part
of ongoing assessment of scientific and soft skill acumen.
• Collates Medical
Advisor/MSL field insights that will be shared internally as appropriate.
• Provides input into
the therapeutic area Medical strategy led by the local Medical Advisor.
• Ensures that there is
adequate and compliant cross-functional collaboration between the Medical
Advisors/MSLs and internal stakeholders.
• Organizes regular team
meetings for relevant trainings, sharing of best practices, reinforcing on
compliance matters and discuss therapeutic area strategies.
• Develop his/her Medical
Advisors/MSLs functional and scientific skills.
• Establishes the annual
performance objectives for his/her team.
• Conducts mid-year and
year-end reviews of team performance.
• Develops and maintains
up-to date scientific knowledge around relevant disease areas, products within
those areas and research methodologies.
• Ensures that all Medical
Advisors/MSLs perform their duties in alignment with company SOPs/Guidelines
and local laws and regulations.
• Willing to spend
25%-40% of his time travelling.

Desired Candidate Profile

Education Requirement:
• He/She must hold a
medical degree (MD, PharmD, Vet. Dental).
• Post graduate medical
degree is preferable.
Required Experience
and Skills**:
• Industry experience of 3 years minimum in Medical Affairs is a
must and therapeutic area experience is desirable
• Previous experience as a Medical Advisor/Medical Manager is
• Strong knowledge of clinical research and scientific data
generation is highly preferred.
• People management experience is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated people or project management and team leadership
skills, as well as listening and coaching skills, preferred
• Demonstrated ability to translate scientific strategy into
tactical and implementation plans
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to create a working environment which
fosters employee engagement
• Strong problem solving skills
• Strong ethics and integrity.
• Ability to work in high performance teams, and in a matrix
organization. Ability to negotiate and
influence others.
• Excellent team player; must excel at teamwork in
cross-functional groups. Must be able to
interact successfully with a variety of individuals at the local level,
including Medical Advisors working in different therapeutic areas, MRL teams,
commercial teams and contract research organizations (CROs).
• Willing to spend
25%-40% of his time travelling.
