The Job Trend in Kuwait

A larger number of Kuwaitis have received employment in the private sector this year. While the civilian job availabilities in Kuwait witnessed a massive increase of 4.4% in 2012, the employment prospects for the expatriate community were mainly driven by a strong hiring in the private sector, especially the recruitment of unskilled workers.

According to an economic update by the National Bank of Kuwait (NBK), the country’s population rose in 2012 owing to a huge growth in expatriate numbers after recruitment in the private sector gained momentum.

The population of Kuwaiti citizens saw a moderate growth, portraying an ageing trend witnessed over the last twenty years. In 2012, the nation’s population rose to 3.82 million, an increase of 3.4%.

The economy experienced more positive sentiments and the job market saw more Kuwaitis being employed in the private sector this year in comparison to last year. Where the private sector was found generating more job prospects in Kuwait, the government sector created fewer new civilian jobs during the year. The net increase in civilian hiring in the public sector was merely 8,500, a decrease from 9,750 the previous year.


The Growth Prospects

As per NBK, the total employment in the country increased by 3.2% in 2012, a trend similar to the prior year. Overall employment touched 2.25 million, out of which 83% were non-residents. Kuwaiti citizens constituted only 17% of employment. The ratio has seen improvement over the past six years when the employed Kuwaitis accounted for only 15% in 2007.

Kuwaiti civilian jobs have increased to more than12,300 in 2012, marking a rise of 4.4%. Job scenario in the private sector showed positive changes in 2012. About 3,000 more Kuwaitis joined work in the private sector by the year-end. The growth graph for employment escalated as the recruitment increased from 1.7% to 5.9% in a year. However, the share of Kuwaitis in the private sector continued to remain low, in comparison to the expats.


Job Opportunities in Kuwait for Women

Among the prominent employment trends in Kuwait, there is one particular trend prevailing over the past two decades – the growing role of womenfolk in the Labor market. This stable development carried forward in 2012. The employment of women between the ages of 30 and 34 years increased to 84% by the closing of 2012. A decade ago, this figure stood at 59%. In contrast, the men have high employment rate of 92%.


Expatriate Employment

The strength of expat employees grew by 3.3% in 2012, a net rise of closely 60,000 jobs. A majority of these job openings were in the private sector for unskilled positions. By the end of 2012, there were 1.86 million expats working in Kuwait. Almost half of them were unskilled and were part of the private sector. Another 30% were domestic workers. The skilled professionals accounted for just about 15% of the total expatriate employee count. The other 7% were hired in the government sector.
