Top Tips to Take Your Career to New Heights in 2017

new career in 2017

With the beginning of the New Year, it is high time you set the career goals that you would like to accomplish in 2017. If you wish to achieve big in life, it is important to stay focused and take concrete actions towards realizing your dreams. Hence, it is better to begin the New Year with a sense of direction, including a proper plan of action for your career development. Goals help you stay on the right track and keep you motivated to give 100% to your career. Before you get down to work, it would be great to lay the foundation right.

Here are a few tips that will help you achieve new heights in your career in 2017:

1. Make learning your prime focus:

As humans, we tend to limit our potential, which is a wrong attitude. If we set our minds to something, there’s nothing that we cannot achieve. This year, promise yourself to make each moment that you spend at work count. Instead of just spending eight hours completing tasks after tasks every day, focus on what new you can learn while doing your work. For this, you will have to stay fully immersed and connected to your work and find out new and interesting ways to complete it. This way, you will learn something new every day.

2. Make the most of your mornings:

Mornings are the best time of the day. You can actually complete unimaginable amount of work as your productivity level is at its highest during the early hours of the day. However, it is easy to fall into the habit of sailing through the morning hours without accomplishing much. To break this habit, start your day by creating a to-do list of all the things you wish to complete during the day. Take up the tasks that you don’t like first and you will see how easily you are able to complete them.

3.  Excel at whatever you do:

Excelling at your work will take you to places. No matter how much you dislike certain areas of your work, it is important that you do a good job performing them and put forth maximum effort. Think about average versus excellent work quality. Doing so will urge you to challenge yourself and achieve excellence in even the most mundane of tasks.

4.  Break your bigger goals into smaller tasks:

Career planning requires you to set concrete goals, some of which may be bigger and require more time and effort on your part. Sometimes it happens that we set big career development plans for ourselves at the beginning of a new year, but end up feeling helpless as the year passes. To avoid such a situation, break your big goals into smaller short-term objectives. The goals that seem unachievable to you will seem achievable and you won’t feel overwhelmed.

5.  Expand your network:

Finding a job should not be the only time you touch base with your existing contacts. Wish them ‘Happy New Year’, ask them how their holidays went and even meet for lunch or coffee to reconnect. You never know, they might share about a new opportunity which can be useful to you. However, your existing network shouldn’t be the only thing you should rely on. Resolve to expand and grow your network in 2017. Go to industry events related to your field of work to meet like-minded people. Form bonds and add these people to your social network.

6.  Don’t hesitate to ask for what you want:

If you are looking forward to climbing up the ladder or a change in your roles and responsibilities at work, don’t expect it to happen on its own. You have to be vocal about it. Share your desire with your manager with a proper plan of action on how you will accomplish it. For that, you first need to be clear about what you want and how you want to achieve it.

7.  Be open to new opportunities:

While job search may not be on your agenda for 2017, it is best to at least be open to new opportunities if something great comes up. Explore the possibilities if a new and interesting opportunity comes your way. You don’t have to say yes to every new thing, but there is no harm in at least knowing your options even if you decide not to go ahead with any of them.

There’s a popular saying, “Good things come to those who wait, greater things come to those who are willing to work for it.” We hope the tips mentioned above will help you in some or the other way in achieving great things in 2017.

Wish you all the best and a very happy new year!
