Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Provide flight-capable critical care physician services for aeromedical evacuation missions, including in-flight care, casualty evacuation, immediate stabilization, and trauma/medical critical care in transit.
Lead the immediate medical management for up to two patients at all times in flight or ground move on board aircraft/rotary/ground platforms, including advanced airway/intubation, ventilator/ECMO support (if applicable), hemodynamic monitoring/vasopressors, emergency/trauma surgical liaison, sedation/analgesia, specialist procedures as required.
Develop/implement clinical protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for aeromedical evacuation, mass casualty incidents (MCI), medical/trauma stabilization in austere settings.
Oversee the flight medical team (flight nurse, paramedic) and provide clinical leadership, mentoring/training of team members, ensuring high-quality care, mission readiness, and continuous improvement.
Coordinate with aviation/flight operations, security, medical logistics, local hospitals and referral networks for evacuation planning, patient hand-over, and continuity of care.
Participate in mission planning, risk assessment, evacuation/CASEVAC/MEDEVAC planning, medical incident command, mass casualty drills/exercises in field offices.
Ensure medical equipment and supplies (while mission provides equipment) are properly utilised, maintained and stocked; contractor responsible for pharmaceuticals/consumables supply chain.
Provide medical oversight in security/aviation risk contexts, including altitude/flight physiology risk, aeromedical accreditation/standards, and ensure medical and aviation safety interfaces are addressed.
Maintain medical documentation (flight logs, patient records, incident reports, after-action reviews) consistent with UN/contractor standards.
Regularly update the Chief Medical Officer and contractor leadership on mission health status, medevac statistics, team performance, lessons learned and improvements.
Desired Candidate Profile
A first-level degree/diploma as a Registered Physician with a minimum of three years progressive post-qualification clinical experience in general medicine.
Postgraduate training or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years post specialist qualification.
Currently registered and licensed to practice medicine and apply to specialty without supervision in own country or another UN member state.
English proficiency- a minimum of Level B 2 is required.
Aeromedical Training Certificate
Experience working in international, multi-disciplinary, or conflict zone settings.
Familiarity with trauma and emergency care in a challenging environment.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a diverse, multidisciplinary medical team.
High levels of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism when working with patients from diverse backgrounds.
Advanced skills in managing ICU technology and life support systems.
Fluency in English, with additional language skills being an advantage.
Shifts: Flexible working hours, with the expectation to work weekends, holidays, and night shifts when required 24/7.
Location: The role is based in Afghanistan within the UNAMA mission area.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as standing for extended periods in high stress conditions and managing physically intensive situations.
