Job Purpose:

To lead and manage the English Department in delivering high-quality teaching and learning aligned with the British National Curriculum (including IGCSE and A-Level where applicable). The Head of English will ensure excellent academic outcomes and foster a love of literature and language across all year levels.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Academic Leadership:

• Lead curriculum planning and development in line with the British Curriculum standards (Key Stages 3–5).
• Ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment throughout the department.
• Monitor and analyze student progress and implement strategies for improvement.
• Prepare students effectively for IGCSE and A-Level examinations (Cambridge/Edexcel).
• Organize and oversee internal assessments, mock exams, and coursework moderation.

2. Department Management:

• Line manage English teachers, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance evaluation.
• Lead department meetings, CPD (Continuing Professional Development), and collaborative planning sessions.
• Coordinate with SEN and EAL departments to support differentiated learning.

3. Quality Assurance:

• Conduct regular lesson observations and book scrutiny to ensure consistency and quality.
• Oversee the use of assessment data to inform planning and improve outcomes.
• Develop and maintain departmental policies, schemes of work, and resources.

4. Enrichment & Extra-Curricular Activities:

• Promote a vibrant reading culture across the school.
• Organize literary events such as book fairs, debates, public speaking, poetry slams, and writing competitions.
• Encourage student participation in regional and international English/literature contests.

5. Communication & Collaboration:

• Liaise with parents regarding student progress and curriculum matters.
• Collaborate with other department heads to support cross-curricular initiatives.
• Represent the department during school inspections (e.g., BSO, KHDA, Ofsted-equivalent).
