Job Summary
The department nurse manager assumes
authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing services
in the department. In collaboration with facility Administration, allocates
department resources in an efficient and economic manner to ensure patient safety
and satisfaction. Collaborates with other departments, medical professionals,
consultant, to develop, support and coordinate care, and related administrative
• Develops, maintains, and implements
nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing
practice, facility philosophy, and operational policies.
• Communicates and interprets policies
and procedures to nursing staff, and monitors staff practices and
• Participates in daily or weekly nursing
management team meetings to discuss department status, census changes,
personnel, or patients complaints or concerns.
• Evaluates the work performance of
department nursing personnel.
• Implements
disciplinary measures according to operational policies.
• Ensures delivery of compassionate
quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate services and
staff coverage on unit.
• Demonstrates knowledge of and
application of Key Clinical Quality Indicators, and proactively monitors
and implements systems to achieve and/or surpass thresholds.
• Exercises overall supervision of patient s
assessments and care plans.
• Oversees and directly involves in competency
testing, and all related competency records and follow up.
• Reviews 24-hour report from every unit
assigned in the department daily to monitor and ensure timely, effective
responses to significant changes in condition, transfers, discharges, use
of restraints, unexplained injuries, falls, behavioral episodes, and
medication errors.
• Oversees nursing schedules to assure
they meet patients needs and regulatory and budgetary standards.
• Performs rounds to observe care and to
interview staff, patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
• Establishes, implements, and monitors the
infection control policies and procedures designed to provide a safe,
sanitary, and comfortable environment designed to prevent the devilment
and transmission of disease and infection.
• Prepares or reviews infection control
surveillance reports to identify trends and to develop effective actions
to control and prevent infections.
• Helps nursing leadership to prepare
staff for inspection surveys, instructing staff on matters of conduct and
disclosure, being interviewed by inspectors, immediate corrections of
problems noted by surveyors, etc. Reviews and reinforces important
standards previously cited.
• Promotes customer service and hospitality
and responds to and adequately resolves complaints or concerns from patients
or families about nursing services.
• Promotes compliance with accident
prevention, reporting non compliances, safety rules, and safe work
practices to prevent employee injury and illness.
• Assures staff is trained in fire and
disaster and other emergency procedures and evaluates performance during
