Roles & Responsibilities

Job Description

A Periodontist is a specialized dental practitioner who focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the placement of dental implants. As an expert in the structures supporting the teeth, a periodontist treats cases that are often beyond the expertise of a general dentist. This role requires a deep understanding of the complex anatomy of the jawbone, gums, and connective tissues. Periodontists are sometimes referred to as the architects of a dental care team, providing necessary and specialized insights into complex cases. They perform both non-surgical and surgical procedures to halt or manage periodontal health issues, working closely with patients to ensure optimal oral health. Equipped with the latest technological advancements, a periodontist's scope of work includes procedures like grafting, guided tissue regeneration, and crown lengthening. Their work is integral to the maintenance of oral health, playing a crucial role in the overall well-being of their patients.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and treat patients with periodontal diseases using advanced clinical methods.
  • Perform surgical procedures such as bone grafts, pocket reduction, and crown lengthening.
  • Place dental implants and collaborate with prosthodontists for successful patient outcomes.
  • Develop customized treatment plans considering each patient s unique dental needs.
  • Educate patients about the prevention and management of periodontal diseases.
  • Use digital imaging tools to analyze and plan patient treatment accurately.
  • Work closely with dental hygienists to ensure coordinated patient care strategies.
  • Continuously update skills and knowledge through ongoing education in periodontology.
  • Document all dental procedures and patient interactions with precision and clarity.
  • Consult with general dentists and specialists to co-manage complex cases effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and ethical standards in dental practice.
  • Utilize laser devices for minimally invasive periodontic surgeries and therapies.

Requirements
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree required.
  • Completion of an accredited postgraduate program in periodontology necessary.
  • State licensure as a dentist and periodontist to practice legally required.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with a keen understanding of oral disease pathology.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and attention to detail in surgical procedures.
  • Exceptional communication skills to effectively educate and guide patients.
  • Commitment to continuing education to remain current with dental advancements.
  • Experience with advanced dental technologies including digital imaging tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary dental team is essential.
