Roles & Responsibilities
Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Shift Supervisor and general supervision of the Operations Manager, the Plant Operator (Cranes) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of the plant’s waste-handling overhead cranes. The role ensures continuous waste feeding to the boilers, supports field operations, assists the Control Room Operator (CRO), performs equipment inspections, and provides essential support to overall plant operations. The position is hands-on and requires strict adherence to operational and HSE procedures.
1.2 Job Responsibilities
Cranes & Waste Handling
Performs daily routine inspections of assigned overhead crane(s) and completes all required log sheets according to procedures.
Operates overhead cranes to lift, move, and feed waste to the hoppers as per operational instructions.
Manipulates crane controls (pedals, levers, buttons) to regulate crane/hoist speed and direction in line with written, verbal, or signal instructions.
Performs basic troubleshooting on overhead cranes and reports malfunctions through formal work orders.
Maintains cleanliness of crane cabins, waste bunker areas, and surrounding work areas.
Plant Operations Support
Assists the CRO and field operators in daily plant operations and conducts regular field inspections.
Conducts required checks as per daily/weekly activity books, the monthly critical items checklist, and operation routines.
Performs lockout/tagout (LOTO) of equipment to support safe maintenance activities.
Supports safe and efficient shutdown and restart of plant systems when required according to procedures.
HSE Responsibilities
Notifies Shift Supervisor of unsafe conditions, equipment defects, or abnormal operational indicators.
Participates in HSE inspections, audits, assessments, and toolbox talks.
Conducts risk identification, analysis, and hazard assessments.
Actively promotes and complies with company HSE policies, procedures, and safety campaigns.
Provides support as part of the installation emergency response team.
Coordination & Reporting
Liaises closely with the maintenance team for planned and unplanned maintenance activities affecting crane operations.
Reports breaches of HSE procedures promptly to supervision/management.
Manages operational data, waste movement logs, and contributes to maintaining plant efficiency.
Performs additional tasks as assigned by the Shift Supervisor or their designee.
Note: Duties may vary depending on operational needs and shift schedules. The role requires flexibility and a proactive approach to plant operations & maintenance support.
Desired Candidate Profile
Educational/Professional Qualifications/Training Certifications
High school diploma • High school diploma or GED
HSE-accredited training qualifications
Formal training or certification in overhead crane operation (preferred but not mandatory)
1.4 Job Experience and Software Competencies
Minimum of 5–8 years in a Power, Energy-from-Waste, or heavy industrial environment
Prior experience operating overhead cranes in waste, industrial, or power plant settings
Preferred knowledge of C DCS
Familiarity with HSE standards and safe plant operating procedures
Proficient or familiar with systems used for plant operations, monitoring, and reporting, e.g.
Control & Monitoring Systems: SCADA/DCS dashboards, PLC interfaces, HMI panels
Process Control Tools: Basic knowledge of Advanced Process Control (APC) systems
Maintenance & Work Order Systems: CMMS tools (IBM Maximo, Infor EAM, SAP PM) for reporting equipment issues
Environmental & Safety Monitoring: EMS, emissions tracking systems, alarms, safety interlocks
Productivity & Reporting: MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint for shift logs and waste/crane operation reports
It is a plus if the candidate has skills in the following systems:
SCADA/DCS configuration and alarm management
PLC basics or troubleshooting
Predictive maintenance or instrumentation monitoring software
ERP systems for operations or production modules

1.6 Additional requirements
Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, shifts, and on-call duties
Knowledge of plant and crane operating procedures, equipment, and safety standards
Understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety practices
