Roles & Responsibilities
1.1 Job Scope Summary
The Process Chemist / Water Treatment Operator is responsible for laboratory testing, water treatment, and IBA maturation at the Waste-to-Energy facility. Ensures compliance with ISO 17025 (lab), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (safety), regulatory requirements, and facility permits. Provides accurate test results, supports process operations, and communicates findings to Operations and QHSE Managers.
1.2 Job Responsibilities
HSE Compliance
Follow all HSE procedures and report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions (ISO 45001)
Comply with COSHH regulations and maintain chemical safety records
Ensure operations meet environmental permits and Duty of Care requirements (ISO 14001)
Laboratory Testing & Water Treatment
Perform chemical, bacteriological, and physical testing on water, wastewater, sludge, surface water, and IBA
Conduct steam and sour water analysis, and monitor residues from Air Pollutio
Control Systems and Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA)
Perform TOC & LOI testing for IBA maturation
Conduct QAL2 & AST verifications on CEMS as part of quality assurance (BS EN 14181)
Calibrate laboratory instruments and perform quality control checks
Record all test results, calibrations, and inspections in line with procedures
Prepare lab and water treatment reports for Operations and QHSE Managers
Maintain laboratory equipment, consumables, and ensure instruments are in good working order
Train plant operators on lab procedures and equipment
Process Support & Compliance
Build and maintain Duty of Care documentation for water treatment and IBA maturation
Conduct regular testing of water, wastewater, waste solids, and surface water discharge to meet permit requirements
Conduct functional tests to ensure CEMS meet QAL2, AST, and QAL3 requirements
Identify process issues and propose corrective actions based on lab results
Hazardous Materials & Waste Management
Manage consignments of hazardous waste and by-products in line with Duty of Care
Desired Candidate Profile
1.3 Educational/Professional Qualifications/Training Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Process Engineering, or related field
Laboratory or water treatment training in ISO 17025, ISO 14001, or ISO 45001 preferred
1.4 Job Experience
Minimum 5 years in laboratory or water treatment operations, ideally in Waste-to-Energy or similar industry
Experience with chemical, biological, and physical testing of water, sludge, or IBA
Relevant chemical, biological and physical testing exposure in Waste to Energy or similar industry
Knowledge of laboratory safety and operational procedures
1.5 Skills
Write clear technical reports and provide demonstrations
Calibrate and maintain lab and water treatment equipment
Strong IT skills (Excel and data management)
Accurate record-keeping and reporting
Good verbal and written communication
