Summary
The purpose of this role is to lead and manage the Neurosurgery clinical program with a focus on advancing HMC s strategic goals in complex surgical care, innovation, and academic excellence. The Consultant will be responsible for driving the development of specialized neurosurgical services, contributing to service transformation and long-term improvements aligned with HMC s institutional objectives.
This role includes oversight of departmental performance and operational management, ensuring that all services meet accreditation and HMC quality and safety standards. The Consultant will support the growth of a high-performing surgical workforce under the umbrella of an academic health system, while promoting a culture of continuous learning and evidence-based practice. Utilizing incident data and performance trends, the Consultant will design and implement corrective actions to enhance patient outcomes and safety. This role requires advanced clinical leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration across disciplines, involving a wide network of healthcare stakeholders across the continuum of care.
Education/Qualifications Required:
Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
• Basic medical degree from recognized institution
• Post-qualification certification
• Qualification Source from: North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand
• USA: The American Board of Neurosurgery
• Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate (FRACPC Neurosurgery)
• UK and Ireland: CCT/CCST/CESR and joined Specialty Register of Neurosurgery
• Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College (FRACP) in Neurosurgery
• Western Europe: Equivalent certification to the above in Neurosurgery
Experience Post-Qualifications:
• Minimum six (6) years of experience
• Subspecialties of interest: in Spine. Functional skull base and cerebrovascular, intraoperative neurophysiology
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
• Perform complex neurosurgical procedures including cranial, spinal, peripheral nerve, and trauma surgeries, in accordance with international best practices and patient safety standards.
• Lead pre-operative evaluations, surgical planning, and post-operative care for neurosurgical patients, both in inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Oversee and participate in the management of neurosurgical emergencies, including acute trauma, intracranial hemorrhages, and spinal cord compression.
• Interpret diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, angiography) and collaborate with radiologists and neurologists for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Supervise the neurosurgical operating theatre, ensuring safe, timely, and effective surgical services.
• Collaborate with ICU, neurology, oncology, rehabilitation, and other specialties for multidisciplinary care of complex neurosurgical patients.
• Participate in departmental quality assurance, morbidity and mortality reviews, and implementation of protocols to ensure continuous improvement.
• Engage in teaching and mentorship of residents, fellows, and junior medical staff as part of HMC s academic health system.
• Contribute to clinical research, innovation in neurosurgical techniques, and the development of service lines aligned with HMC s strategic objectives.
• Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation and compliance with HMC and Ministry of Public Health regulations.
• Participate in on-call duties and provide leadership in the management of urgent and emergent neurosurgical cases.
• Promote patient-centered care and uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in all interactions.
