Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
The Senior Mechanical Technician is responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems within data center environments. These include HVAC systems, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH units, cooling towers, pumps, valves, and other mission-critical mechanical infrastructure. The technician plays a key role in ensuring optimal environmental conditions for IT equipment and maintaining 24/7 uptime requirements. This senior-level role demands hands-on technical expertise, a strong understanding of data center standards, and leadership in mentoring junior technicians.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Maintenance:
Perform routine and preventive maintenance on mechanical infrastructure (chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, AHUs, etc.).
Monitor and adjust building management systems (BMS) and mechanical controls to maintain efficient cooling performance.
Perform diagnostics and troubleshoot mechanical faults; initiate and execute corrective actions swiftly.
Installation & Commissioning:
Support installation and commissioning of new mechanical systems as part of data center build-outs or upgrades.
Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and layout plans to execute installations with precision.
Coordinate with the electrical and IT teams during infrastructure commissioning phases. Ensure consistent operational procedures, reporting, and escalation protocols across locations.
Compliance & Risk Management:
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, performance data, and equipment logs.
Identify opportunities for system optimization and energy efficiency.
Provide regular reports to management on system status, incidents, and improvement suggestions.
Compliance & Safety:
Ensure all mechanical work complies with relevant codes, safety standards, and manufacturer guidelines.
Participate in risk assessments, emergency drills, and health & safety audits.
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free working environment.
Mentoring & Team Collaboration:
Guide and support junior mechanical technicians and apprentices.
Collaborate with electrical, network, and IT infrastructure teams for integrated solutions.
Assist in developing SOPs, checklists, and training programs.
Desired Candidate Profile
Diploma or Technical Degree in Mechanical Engineering or HVAC Technology.
5+ years of relevant experience in mechanical systems, ideally in data centers, critical facilities, or industrial environments.
Strong understanding of HVAC systems, chilled water plants, CRAC/CRAH units, cooling towers, and BMS.
Ability to read technical drawings and mechanical schematics.
Familiar with relevant codes and standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, local mechanical codes)
Proficient with maintenance tools, diagnostic equipment, and CMMS platforms.
WORKING CONDITIONS INCLUDE:
Shift work, weekend work, and on-call responsibilities.
Mission-critical environments where precision and responsiveness are key.
Preferred qualifications
HVAC Certification (EPA, ASHRAE, etc.)
BMS Controls Training (e.g., Schneider, Johnson Controls)
Data Center Certifications (CDCTP, CDCP, or Uptime-accredited training)
Health & Safety (OSHA, NEBOSH, or equivalent)
