Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Sustainability Officer / Engineer will be responsible for integrating sustainable practices into construction projects, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and promoting resource efficiency. This role involves developing and implementing sustainability strategies, monitoring environmental impact, and collaborating with various stakeholders to drive sustainable construction initiatives.


1. Sustainability Strategy & Implementation:


  • Develop and execute sustainability strategies aligned with the company’s environmental goals and regulatory requirements.

  • Implement best practices for sustainable design, energy efficiency, and resource conservation in construction projects.

  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, and project managers to integrate green building technologies and eco-friendly materials.

  • Ensure compliance with local and international sustainability standards such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method etc.


2. Environmental Compliance & Regulations:


  • Stay up to date with environmental laws, sustainability regulations, and building codes relevant to the construction industry.

  • Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIA) and ensure mitigation measures are implemented.

  • Work closely with regulatory bodies and government agencies to obtain necessary approvals and permits.

  • Address any environmental risks associated with construction activities and develop action plans for risk mitigation.


3. Energy & Resource Efficiency:


  • Identify and implement strategies to reduce energy consumption, water usage, and construction waste.

  • Promote the use of renewable energy sources such as solar panels and energy-efficient HVAC systems.

  • Develop guidelines for material sourcing to encourage the use of recycled, locally sourced, and sustainable building materials.

  • Monitor carbon footprint and propose measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from construction operations.


4. Waste Management & Pollution Control:


  • Design and implement waste management programs to reduce landfill waste and promote recycling on construction sites.

  • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials and compliance with environmental health and safety regulations.

  • Work with subcontractors and suppliers to encourage sustainable procurement and reduce packaging waste.


5. Reporting & Documentation:


  • Prepare sustainability reports, environmental audits, and performance metrics to track progress and areas of improvement.

  • Maintain documentation for certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, Estidama, WELL Building Standard).

  • Present sustainability performance data to senior management and key stakeholders.


6. Stakeholder Engagement & Training:


  • Conduct training sessions and awareness programs for employees, subcontractors, and site workers on sustainability best practices.

  • Work closely with procurement teams to ensure sustainability is a key factor in supplier selection.

  • Engage with clients, investors, and project partners to advocate for sustainable building practices.

Desired Candidate Profile

Education:


  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related field.

Certifications:


  • Professional certifications in LEED-GA/ BREEAM and NEBOSH are highly desirable.

Minimum experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in sustainability or environmental management within the construction industry.

  • Proven track record of successfully implementing sustainability initiatives in building projects.


C. Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):


  • Strong knowledge of green building standards and environmental compliance regulations.

  • Experience with energy modeling, life cycle assessment (LCA), and carbon footprint analysis.

  • Proficiency in sustainability reporting tools and environmental monitoring software.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to address sustainability challenges in construction.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.

  • Ability to lead sustainability initiatives and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
