Supervise and coordinate all activities related to pipe and structural welding for ship repair, special projects, new building and conversion projects which includes creation and qualification of WPS, PQR, WQT, weld repair procedures, PWHT procedures, Welders training and welder’s failure analysis. Keep abreast of welding developments and best practices. Ensure the timely and accurate execution of work schedules and plans for the projects in line with health, safety, quality and environmental procedures of ODC.
Responsible for: (The main job activities)
Review contract requirement related to welding. Provide comments/feedback to commercial and production departments on welding topics on client's specification/procedure/tender.
Ensuring yard compliance with national and international standards, class rules and legislations.
Liaise with third party inspection authorities whenever required for the project and issuing any necessary work orders for inspections and / or testing.
Planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling activities of WPQR qualification and preparation of relevant WPS. Updating and maintaining the files of approved WPS's.
Authorized to stop process if they do not meet specified requirements.
Raising Occurrence report, performing root cause analysis and approving re-work processes.
Collating, updating and filing, all relevant to welding engineering documents by project.
Issuing, maintaining and revalidating welders qualification test records (WQTR).
Providing expertise in the development of specific procedures, techniques, check lists, sequences or any other welding related requirements.
Material grade identification and material confirmation tests.
Liaison with the Engineering Department, Quality Engineers/Supervisors/Inspectors, Project Managers, Production Supervisors, Owner's Representatives and Classification Surveyors whenever required for the project.
Preparing procedures and work instructions related to heat treatment activities.
Overseeing process of welding and welding related equipment calibration.
Selection, approval and quantity estimation of welding consumables and preparation of relevant work instruction related to welding consumables.
Planning, organizing, coordinating and controlling activities of assistant welding engineers.
Ensuring that the Safety, Quality & Environment requirements of the yard are strictly followed.
Performing other job related duties as assigned by the section head.
University degree in Welding I Metallurgical Mechanical Engineering with minimum 5 -7 years of experience as Welding Engineer in new building I repair shipyard, oil and gas industry, pressure vessels, and structures.
Good English language skills both oral and written.
Good communication skills with the ability to build strong relationship with all level of yard hierarchy and customers.
Shall have thorough knowledge of materials and weldability (both ferrous and non-ferrous) and various NDT / Mechanical Testing methods.
Shall be capable of formulating for welding and repair by welding.
Shall be capable of effectively interpreting international codes & class rules on welding and Testing
Quality Control and Technical Assurance:
Ensure adherence to quality standard practices of piping activities as per ASME B31.3, AWS D1.1 and ASME Sect IX.
Material Requirements and Use
Provide recommendations to the Management – Pipe and Structural department on vis a vis materials / welding preparation required for jobs to ensure that equipment, welding consumables or material are obtained on time in order to complete job requirements.
Oversee the use of materials / manhours in order to minimise wastage of materials and financial losses.
Compile and prepare technical reports on challenges and issues faced, prioritising issues, materials / technique required, mitigation steps, etc. and submit to the Management – Pipe and Structural department as required so that he/she is aware of the progress and challenges and can take corrective actions.
