Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Implement provided Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) controls and follow instructions.
Look after and keep the provided HSE equipment and facilities healthy and report any damage of equipment and facilities identified to the HSE team.
Report any HSE incidents and missed behavioural observations.
The key role and responsibilities of an Assistant Professor should include, but are not exclusive to, teaching and learning support, research and administration and faculty support activities in the following areas:
Teaching and learning support
- Design, develop, and deliver various courses at various academic levels.
- Collaborate with other faculty members to implement SU teaching and learning strategy.
- Ensure content, delivery methods, and materials align with defined learning outcomes.
- Create and enhance teaching materials, methods, and approaches to improve subject area delivery.
- Contribute to the development of good academic practices within the faculty.
- Utilize appropriate teaching, learning support, and assessment methods for effective knowledge transfer.
- Play an active role in academic advising of assigned students.
- Develop student skills by identifying learning needs and defining appropriate objectives.
- Supervise laboratory teams in related courses as needed).
- Moderate assigned courses and instructional materials, focusing on the following areas:
- Ensuring that instructional materials are relevant, up to date, and adequate to achieve the course learning outcomes (CLOs) and provide feedback to the course coordinator.
- Reviewing the alignment of CLOs with Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) to ensure proper mapping.
- Reviewing the alignment of assessment types with the CLOs to ensure valid assessment.
- Moderating the course assessments and ensure that the course coordinator adheres to the assessment policy.
- Reviewing the teaching and learning strategies to ensure they promote active learning, critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-based learning.
- Reviewing the course page content at SULMS and providing feedback to the course coordinator.
Research and scholarship
- Contributing to and developing research activities across the faculty.
- Helping the faculty develop a teaching-research nexus and increase the quality of teaching and research activities.
- Writing publications of the appropriate standard and/or disseminating research findings using media appropriate to the discipline.
- Collaborating with the RIC in seeking external funding opportunities for research and consultancies.
Administration and Faculty Support
- Participating in the faculty s engagement with local and national businesses and industries.
- Exercising academic leadership for all subject area activities - teaching and/or research, as appropriate.
- Assisting in the annual review of course and program reviews.
- Collaborating with senior staff in determining the need for and allocation of resources within the area of responsibility.
- Participating in institutional and strategic planning.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of faculty operational plans.
- Ensuring that junior staff and teaching assistants are given adequate mentoring and support.
The employee is required to strictly adhere and comply with Sohar University policies, bylaws, and regulations that are related to their work.
Any other assigned tasks that fall within the competence of the department/faculty.
Desired Candidate Profile
A PhD degree in a discipline taught by the Faculty, from an internationally recognised University
Knowledge & Skills:
General:
- Fully conversant with the Omani labour law.
- Excellent written and spoken English/Arabic (following the department/faculty)
- Ability to use computers and relevant computer applications for the job.
- Clear and effective communicator.
- Interpersonal skills
- Resourceful (know where to find information for problem-solving).
- Team player, leads and supports changes to improve business performance.
Specifics:
- Aware of the Health and Safety requirements of staff at work and environmental conservation programs.
- Significant research experience
Relevant Experience:
Good experience in tertiary teaching experience and a growing publication record, with clear signs of research promise.
