Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated Avifauna Specialist to support environmental compliance and monitoring activities for a major transmission line project. This is a project-based, full-time, onsite role focused on ensuring compliance with environmental permit requirements and delivering a detailed avifauna study report in alignment with NCW regulations and international best practice.

The specialist will oversee avifauna monitoring during the construction phase and lead a focused assessment coinciding with the migratory season. The resulting study will provide recommendations for protective measures, ensuring biodiversity safeguards are embedded into construction practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental compliance and monitoring with a focus on avifauna, ensuring contractors adhere to permit conditions and regulatory requirements
  • Design and implement an avifauna assessment during the migratory bird season, documenting species occurrence, movement patterns, and important migratory bird habitats
  • Prepare and deliver a comprehensive avifauna study report, with recommendations for protective measures consistent with NCW requirements and international standards
  • Provide input to and develop monitoring plans and reporting templates for the avifauna aspect, in coordination with other specialists and the on-site environmental manager
  • Support collision and electrocution risk assessments for transmission line infrastructure, recommending appropriate mitigation measures
  • Produce regular compliance reports and technical deliverables for submission to the client and regulators
  • Develop monitoring protocols, checklists, and guidance documents to support construction-phase biodiversity protection
  • Mentor junior ecologists and liaise with multidisciplinary teams specifically to ensure avifauna considerations are integrated into broader environmental programme and engage with contractors, regulators, and conservation stakeholders on avifauna-related issues and compliance measures.

Desired Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications / Skills:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in ecology, ornithology, environmental science, or related field;
  • 8-10 years of professional experience in avifauna ecology, including at least 3 years in the Middle East
  • Demonstrated expertise in avian survey methodologies, including migratory bird monitoring
  • Proven experience in construction compliance monitoring and environmental reporting
  • Robust knowledge of Saudi environmental regulations (NCEC, NCW) and international standards (IFC PS6, EP4, IUCN)
  • Ability and willingness to be based onsite in Al Wajh for the duration of the project
  • Familiarity with Red Sea migratory flyways and Important Bird Areas (IBAs) desirable
  • GIS proficiency for survey data analysis and mapping
  • Experience with radar ornithology, collision risk modelling, or automated bird detection systems
