Changing industries? Your CV needs a different kind of rewrite

Which means if you are changing industries, you are moving with the market, not against it.

The CV challenge is specific though. A CV written for your current industry will not automatically translate. The work is in reframing what you have done in language that lands for a new audience.

Lead with skills, not just titles.

A hiring manager in a new sector does not know what your job title meant in your previous one. What they understand is capability. Lead your CV with a short, clear profile section that describes what you do in plain terms, the problems you solve, the functions you lead, the outcomes you drive, without relying on industry-specific context to make it make sense.

Reframe your experience, do not just list it.

Go through each role and ask: what does this experience mean to someone in the industry I am moving into? A logistics background moving into supply chain consulting reads differently than the same background on a CV aimed at e-commerce operations. The facts stay the same. The emphasis shifts.

Show that you understand the new industry.

A short line in your profile or covering note that demonstrates genuine knowledge of the sector you are entering goes a long way. It signals that this is a considered move, not a desperate one.

The pivot is a strength. The CV just needs to say so clearly.
