How to talk about a short stint on your CV?

A role that lasted six or eight months on a CV is not the red flag most candidates fear it is. What makes it a problem is not the duration. It is how you handle it.

Hiring managers here see short stints regularly. Contracts end. Companies restructure. Roles turn out to be different from what was described. These are understood realities of professional life and most experienced recruiters will not hold one short role against you if the rest of your career tells a consistent story.

The mistake is over-explaining.

On your CV, keep it factual.

List the role, the company, the dates, and two or three lines about what you delivered. Do not add a line explaining why you left. The CV is not the place for that narrative. If it comes up in an interview, you can address it calmly and briefly. On paper, treat it exactly the same as every other role.

In an interview, keep it short and forward facing.

One or two sentences is enough. "The role was not aligned with what was discussed during the hiring process and I made the decision to move on." Or: "The project I was brought in for was completed ahead of schedule." Then move the conversation forward. The more time you spend on it, the more weight it carries in the interviewer's mind.

If you have more than one short stint, group the narrative.

Two short roles in a row can raise a question. The answer is usually simple: contract-based work, a restructuring, or a deliberate career exploration phase. Frame it honestly and then redirect to what you are looking for now and why this role fits.

A short stint is a detail on your CV. Your career is the story. Keep the focus where it belongs.
