How to work effectively with a manager who gives very little feedback?

In many organisations across the region, your manager may not check in with you weekly. They may not offer verbal praise after a strong deliverable. They may not schedule regular one-on-ones. This does not mean they are disengaged or dissatisfied. It often means the opposite.

In several workplace cultures that intersect here, silence from leadership is a form of trust. You were hired to do a job. If no one is correcting you, the assumption is that you are doing it well. For professionals coming from environments where frequent feedback is the norm, this can feel unsettling at first. Adjusting to it is straightforward once you understand what is happening.

Create your own feedback loops.

Rather than waiting for input, set up brief, low-pressure check-ins yourself. A short message after completing a major task: "Finished the report, sharing it now. Let me know if you would like any changes." This gives your manager an easy opening to respond without requiring them to initiate. Most managers appreciate this approach because it shows initiative without creating pressure.

Watch for non-verbal signals.

Being included in important meetings. Being asked to take on a visible project. Being introduced to senior stakeholders. These are forms of feedback that carry significant weight in relationship-driven workplaces. They may not come with the words "great job" but they communicate the same thing.

When you genuinely need direction, ask specific questions.

"Am I on the right track with this approach?" lands better than "How am I doing?" Specific questions make it easy for a manager to respond quickly and concretely. Broad questions can feel like they require a performance review, which is why they often go unanswered.

The management style here is not a gap. It is a different operating system. Once you learn to read it, you will find it gives you more autonomy and room to grow than most alternatives.
