Qatar hiring eases just 9% as foundational sectors grow

3 min readPublished on 22 Jul 2026

Hiring in Qatar eased 9% year-on-year in April and May 2026, the mildest slowdown of any market in the series. The Naukrigulf Hiring Index stood at 1,252 in April and 1,105 in May, against an April–May 2025 average of 1,302.

The gentle headline is only half the story. Beneath it, several of Qatar's largest sectors were not cooling at all. They were growing.

The sectors doing the building kept hiring

BFSI led the market, growing 29% year-on-year. Real Estate and Construction rose 11% and Manufacturing and Industrial 9%. Together these are the sectors laying the foundations of Qatar's longer-term plans, and they are still very much hiring. Technology held close to steady too, with IT and Digital easing just 3%.

Sharad Sindhwani, EVP, Business and Product Head at Naukrigulf, framed it in the report: hiring eased modestly "despite Construction and Real estate, BFSI, and Manufacturing growing year-on-year. For a market on the way to 2030 goals, this reads as continued confidence in the foundational sectors."

Technical and specialist functions held their ground

At the functional level, the resilience was concentrated in technical work. IT roles grew 3%, while Core Engineering, the largest function by volume, was essentially flat at plus 0.2%, and Finance held at plus 0.4%. The sharpest pullback was in Sales and Marketing, down 42%. The market kept its specialists and eased on commercial headcount.

The door opened wider for new entrants

One of the most striking signals sits at the entry level. Fresher hiring rose 18% year-on-year, the opposite of what a slowdown usually does to beginners. Pay backed it up: roles at the entry level of the scale, up to QAR 10K a month, grew 4%. For anyone starting out, Qatar is a market worth watching closely.

Most roles stayed open

About 65% of Qatar mandates stated no nationality preference at all, making openness the single largest category in the market. The European-preferred share sits above the regional average, reflecting Qatar's project-led energy and infrastructure hiring.

What it means

For jobseekers: target the sectors that grew, weight towards technical and specialist roles, and if you are early in your career, act on the entry-level momentum now. For employers: competition for specialist and technical talent stayed real, so resource those searches properly, and widen preference criteria to compete in the largest, most open part of the market.

Qatar's headline barely moved, but the detail beneath it is where the opportunity is. The Index maps all of it.
