Working with colleagues from 30 different countries in one office

Walk into most offices in the UAE or Qatar and you will hear three languages before you reach your desk. This is not unusual here. It is the norm.

The region's workforce is one of the most internationally diverse in the world. A single team can include professionals from the Philippines, Lebanon, the UK, India, South Africa, Egypt, and Pakistan, all reporting to the same manager and working toward the same deliverable. For professionals who have only worked in culturally homogeneous environments, this is a genuine adjustment. For those who lean into it, it becomes one of the most rewarding parts of working here.

Communication styles will vary. That is a feature, not a problem.

Some colleagues will be direct. Others will communicate through context and implication. Neither approach is wrong. The professionals who thrive in diverse teams are the ones who develop the habit of checking understanding rather than assuming it. A quick "just to confirm, we are aligned on X" saves more time than most people realise.

Humour, tone, and formality land differently across cultures.

A joke that works perfectly with British colleague might fall flat or even confuse someone from a different background. This is not a reason to be guarded. It is a reason to be curious. Ask questions. Learn what matters to the people around you. Most colleagues are happy to share when the interest is genuine.

Holidays and religious observances will overlap.

Ramadan, Diwali, Christmas, Lunar New Year, Eid. In offices here, these are not minority events. They are part of the shared calendar and most organisations acknowledge them warmly. Understanding what your colleagues observe and why builds trust faster than any team-building exercise.

This diversity is a career asset.

Professionals who work effectively across cultures develop a skill set that is increasingly valuable everywhere. The ability to lead, negotiate, and collaborate across national lines is something this region trains you in daily, just by showing up.

Few workplaces anywhere in the world offer this. It is one of the things that makes working here genuinely distinctive.
