Roles & Responsibilities

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Consultant Anaesthetist to join the Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau. The role involves delivering specialist anesthesia services for acute and elective cases, ensuring safe perioperative care, and contributing to professional training, clinical leadership, and service development.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Provide safe and effective an aesthesia for elective and acute surgeries (general, obstetric, pain services, diagnostic and interventional radiology, and perioperative care).
  • Conduct preoperative assessments and postoperative reviews, including supervision in the PACU and transfers to critical care when required.
  • Ensure timely clinical decision-making, informed consent, accurate documentation, and adherence to clinical protocols.
  • Deliver safe and effective acute and complex pain management services.
  • Participate in after-hours call and acute out-of-hours rosters.

Non-Clinical Duties

  • Participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and fulfil Anaesthesia College requirements.
  • Attend departmental education, morbidity & mortality meetings, and business meetings.
  • Contribute to clinical pathway and guideline development, audit, and quality improvement activities.
  • Engage in teaching and supervision of medical students, registrars, nurses, and anaesthetic technicians.
  • Participate in credentialing, performance reviews, and clinical research where applicable.

Professional & Leadership Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to junior doctors and allied staff.
  • Support service development through recruitment, orientation, clinical audits, and workforce planning.
  • Model best clinical practice, encourage innovation, and lead discussions on patient care outcomes.
  • Uphold cultural safety, diversity, and the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.
  • Use IT systems effectively for clinical and professional work.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification suitable for vocational registration as a Specialist Anaesthetist with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
  • Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA) or equivalent.

Experience

  • Proven experience across anaesthesia practice, preferably including areas relevant to CM Health service requirements.
  • Experience in perioperative care, acute pain management, and working in multidisciplinary hospital settings.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Registered as a Specialist with the Medical Council of NZ.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to supervise, teach, and mentor clinical staff.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, service development, and innovation.
