Job Purpose

The Control Room Operator is responsible for monitoring, controlling, and maintaining the natural gas distribution network in alignment with supply plans, operational procedures, and safety regulations. The role ensures uninterrupted, safe, and reliable delivery of gas to customers by supervising system operating parameters, coordinating with operational and emergency teams, and responding promptly to alarms, events, and deviations in system conditions.

Key Performance Areas / Responsibilities

System Monitoring and Control

Monitor real‑time operational parameters across all stages of the gas distribution system, including pressure, flow, consumption levels, and system integrity status.

Execute system adjustments as required to maintain network stability and safe supply conditions.

Follow approved operational procedures and supply plans to ensure consistent service delivery.

Coordination and Communication

Coordinate with field operations, maintenance, dispatch, engineering, and other operational personnel for smooth network functioning.

Communicate system deviations, abnormal conditions, and required interventions to relevant teams in real time.

Log all operational activities, events, alarms, and system changes as per control room protocols.

Monitoring External Factors

Monitor weather conditions, traffic conditions, and other external factors that may impact system performance or field response capabilities.

Notify relevant personnel immediately when external risks are identified.

Alarm and Incident Response

Respond to all alarms, alerts, and incoming control room calls promptly and in accordance with emergency procedures.

Initiate required system actions and coordinate with QHSE, authorized engineers, emergency responders, and management during incidents or emergencies.

Support activation of emergency shutdowns or isolation procedures as required.

Systems Operation & Technical Competence

Operate SCADA and other system monitoring and control software with full situational awareness.

Identify system abnormalities and recommend corrective actions.

Ensure accurate and timely data entry, system updates, and reporting.

Safety & Compliance

Adhere strictly to company safety standards, operating procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Support safe operation of the gas distribution system by escalating hazards and ensuring timely intervention.

Maintain control room discipline, documentation accuracy, and compliance with audit requirements.

Communication & Customer Interface

Communicate clearly and professionally with internal teams, customers (when required), and emergency personnel.

Provide timely updates on system performance, maintenance activities, and incident handling.

Support customer service teams by providing accurate operational information.

Qualification

Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Petroleum, or equivalent engineering field.

Experience

Experience in gas distribution operations, control room operations, or utility operations preferred.

Exposure to SCADA, DCS, or industrial control systems is an advantage.

Strong understanding of natural gas distribution systems, pressure regulation, and pipeline operations.

Proficiency in SCADA and computer-based monitoring systems.

Knowledge of emergency response procedures, safety regulations, and gas industry standards.

Ability to analyze system data and take timely corrective actions.
