Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the DVC Academic Affairs, the Dean s remit includes the following:

Leadership

  • Include Health, Safety requirements and Environmental conservation (HSE) in the roles and responsibilities of own staff, including: - (setting performance targets, reporting incidents , near misses, participating in
  • Establish, implement and maintain an effective, efficient and proactive work environment within the department/faculty team.
  • Develop, implement and maintain up-to-date policies, procedures, and manuals and oversee the development and implementation of all material related to the department/faculty.
  • Track, measure, analyse and deliver reports to the management committee.
  • Provide academic and strategic leadership to give purpose and direction to take the faculty forward.
  • Be responsible for managing others and their performance with honesty and integrity.
  • Provide academic management by overseeing and developing the faculty s core teaching, assessment, advising, research, and other service activities related to knowledge transfer.
  • Ensure the faculty s responsibilities to students concerning admission, teaching, progression, and advising are fully met.
  • Facilitate and promote the development of intra and interdisciplinary academic activity in teaching and research.
  • Enhance and support collaborations across faculties and with other universities within the framework defined at SU.
  • Guide and support individual staff towards achieving strategic goals and performance targets.
  • Liaise with local and regional industry and business communities to support, develop and promote faculty and university objectives.
  • Liaise with Executive Management and the DVC Academic Affairs on allocating resources, including staff, and planning future allocations.
  • Estimate annual budget requirements for own department /faculty and effectively manage the budget allocations.
  • Provide resource management by ensuring the effective use of resources, appropriately managing and monitoring budgets and controlling the flow and quality of work.
  • Establish a transparent and efficient coordination structure (programme, course, exam review, staff development, etc.) with clearly determined terms and tasks.
  • Guide and lead the faculty's external review process.

Teaching

  • Develop the portfolio of programmes offered by the faculty in response to the University s strategic plan and market needs and demands, and follow up with relevant organisations and MoHE&I for necessary approvals in line with instructions from the DVC Academic Affairs office.
  • Account for and manage the effective delivery of all programmes in collaboration with the Programme and Course Coordinators.
  • Ensure the quality and standards of programmes within the Faculty are continuously maintained and enhanced to promote effective knowledge transfer and develop active learning capabilities.
  • Support innovation in course design and delivery, learning, teaching and assessment methods.
  • Contribute to the teaching undertaken within the faculty.
  • Lead the faculty s approach to enhancing student progression and achievement.

Research

  • Raise the research profile of the faculty internally and externally.
  • Enhance the quality and volume of research by encouraging and enabling demonstrable research achievement.
  • Ensure effective research management and, where possible, contribute to the research undertaken within the faculty.
  • Take the lead role in increasing the quality of teaching and research activities.
  • Encourage student-teaching research synergies to maximise the student s knowledge transfer experience.

Staff Development

  • Engage in self-development.
  • Identify staff strengths and weaknesses, and identify, implement, and follow up on the progress of the staff development plans.
  • Monitor and appraise staff in line with University policies and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain a proactive activity plan for all forging role & responsibilities.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the line manager & Sohar University Management.

Qualifications: A PhD degree in a discipline taught by the University, from an internationally recognised University.

Knowledge & Skills:

General:

  • Fully conversant with the Omani labour law.
  • Excellent written and spoken English/Arabic ( in accordance with the department/faculty)
  • Clear and effective communicator.
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Conversant with the use of computers and role & responsibilities specific applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management ability

Specifics:

  • Conversant with the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental conservation requirements within own responsibility.
  • Excellent research experience in the fields covered by the faculty programmes, evidenced by appropriate publications and successful research grants.
  • Team player, leads and supports changes to improve business performance.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Quality Assurance, Business Improvement and Risk Management processes.

Relevant Experience:

  • Demonstrated excellence and leadership in academic management, as a head of department or above, for not less than five years.
  • Experience in budget management and resource planning
