Roles & Responsibilities
1. Market & Commercial Skills Deep understanding of dry bulk markets (Capesize, Panamax/Kamsarmax, Ultramax, Supramax, Handysize) Ability to analyze supply–demand, tonnage lists, cargo flows, and seasonal trends Voyage estimation: freight calculations, TCE, hire rates, bunker costs Knowledge of charter party structures (voyage, time charter, COA) Awareness of commodity trades (coal, grain, ore, bauxite, steel products)
2. Negotiation & Deal-Making Strong negotiation skills (freight, hire, demurrage/despatch, options) Structuring commercially balanced deals for owners and charterers Ability to close deals quickly under market pressure Risk awareness and protection of principal’s interests
3. Charter Party & Legal Knowledge Solid understanding of charter party forms (GENCON, NYPE, SYNACOMEX, AMWELSH, etc.) Knowledge of: Laytime & demurrage Cancelling clauses NOR & port terms Off-hire (for TC) Ability to spot legal and commercial pitfalls
4. Technical & Operational Awareness Basic ship knowledge: Draft, intake, speed & consumption Gear vs gearless vessels Hold sizes, hatch limitations Understanding of: Port restrictions and tidal windows Loading/discharging practices Weather, routing, piracy considerations
5. Communication & Relationship Skills Clear, concise email and verbal communication Relationship-building with: Owners Charterers Operators Traders Ability to manage multiple stakeholders calmly Professionalism and discretion (confidentiality is critical)
6. Analytical & Digital Skills Fast mental math and spreadsheet skills Use of: Market platforms (Baltic, Q88, Veson, etc.) Voyage calculators Ability to interpret market data and act decisively
7. Personal Attributes High stress tolerance in fast-moving markets Persistence and resilience (many deals don’t close) Strong ethics and trustworthiness Time management across multiple negotiations Willingness to work long and irregular hours
8. Experience & Progression (Typical) Trainee / Junior Broker: market reporting, fixtures, calculations Broker: active negotiation, deal execution Senior Broker: client management, strategy, big accounts
Desired Candidate Profile
The company is looking for an experienced self-motivated Dry Bulk Ship Broker to join their team in Dubai. The successful individual will be responsible for: Managing the existing dry bulk cargo client base and developing new clients across industry sectors. Negotiating contractual and spot voyage charters as well as time charters across vessel sizes. Coordinate with vessel operations internally and externally to ensure end to end smooth running of operations. Market research and analysis for client presentations and guidance. To be considered for this job you meet the following requirements: Possess a minimum of 3 years dry bulk experience. A successful track record of developing business within the dry cargo markets. Able to demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of Charter party terms and be able to actively document all negotiations to formulate the agreements.
