Roles & Responsibilities

1.1 Job Scope Summary

 

The EC&I Technician focuses on the field execution of installation, maintaining, fault-finding, and calibrating all electrical, control and instrumentation systems to ensure safe and efficient plant operation. This includes working with PLC/DCS systems, HV/LV equipment, and process instruments, conducting planned and reactive maintenance. The role requires strict adherence to safety, accurate record-keeping and report writing.


1.2 Job Responsibilities

 

Technical & Hands on

  • Perform installation, inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation and control systems (sensors, transmitters, analyzers, PLC I/O, HMIs, control valves, MOVs, SCADA/DCS interfaces)

  • Perform installation, inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems (HV,LV equipment, motors, lighting, actuators, relays and solenoids)

  • Maintain alarms and automatic shutdown systems across various process variables

  • Conduct preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities

  • Perform daily plant inspections, walkdowns, and log anomalies or abnormal conditions

  • Perform testing and assist with commissioning of new or modified EC&I  systems

  • Use sketches, schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and loop sheets to execute technical tasks

  • Conduct lockout/tagout procedures safely and correctly during maintenance work

  • Maintain updated records of maintenance tasks, calibration sheets, and technical documentation

  • Use multimeters and test equipment to diagnose electrical faults

  • Calibrate field instruments using calibration rigs and handheld devices

  • Strip, inspect, and rebuild motors, actuators, and control valves

  • Upload/download programs and fault-find on PLC systems

  • Test and inspect switchgear, relays, and protection systems

  • Replace faulty sensors, transmitters, and control components

  • Perform loop checks and functional testing of control systems


Note: It is not essential to be an expert in all areas; however, a broad understanding of all disciplines is required to effectively perform the role and support plant operations.

 

Coordination and Field Support

  • Coordinate field tasks and report progress to the EC&I Team leader

  • Support operations teams during equipment checks and troubleshooting

  • Assist vendors or contractors performing specialized instrumentation work

  • Report delays, material needs, or equipment issues promptly to the EC&I Team leader

  • Support the planning and scheduling of preventive and corrective maintenance activities


C. Compliance, Safety & Reporting

  • Comply with all HSE requirements, company procedures, and operational standards

  • Accurately document maintenance work in the CMMS/ERP system

  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and risk assessments

  • Follow safe work practices and immediately report hazards or unsafe conditions

  • Assist in maintaining instrumentation relevant to environmental/emissions monitoring systems

1.3 Educational/Professional Qualifications/Training Certifications

  • Diploma in Instrumentation & Control, Electrical, Electronics, or related discipline

  • HSE accredited training qualifications


1.4 Job Experience & Software Competencies

  • 3–5 years of experience in EC&I maintenance, preferably in power generation, industrial plants, or Waste-to-Energy facilities

  • Hands-on experience with PLC I/O, SCADA/DCS systems, transmitters, analyzers, valves, MOVs, and field instrumentation

  • Knowledge of process control basics, electrical theory, ISA standards, NEC concepts, and emergency DC systems

  • Experience of HV LV and transformers

  • Experience calibrating transmitters, analyzers, control valves, and MOVs

  • Familiarity with environmental controls, emissions instruments, and safety systems

  • Knowledge of HSE standards, plant safety requirements, and safe work practices.

  • Proficient or familiar with systems used for EC&I maintenance, monitoring, and reporting, e.g below.:

-        Maintenance & Asset Management: IBM Maximo, Infor EAM, CMMS tools

-        Control & Operations Systems:

-        Advanced Process Control (APC)

-        Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

-        Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

-        Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)

-        ERP / Work Order Systems: SAP PM, Oracle Maintenance, or equivalent

-        Productivity & Reporting: MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint

 

Desired Candidate Profile

  • 1.5 Core Competencies

    • Safety Focus: Strictly follows power plant and waste-to-energy safety rules, including permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and environmental safety requirements. Actively participates in toolbox talks and reports unsafe conditions, incidents, or near misses.

    • Technical Knowledge: Possesses basic practical knowledge of power plant and waste-to-energy instrumentation and control systems, including sensors, transmitters, control valves, PLC/DCS systems, analyzers, and field instruments. Performs routine inspection, calibration, and maintenance tasks under supervision in accordance with approved procedures.

    • Processing Details (Analysis/Reasoning): Able to identify abnormal instrument readings, alarms, or basic control system deviations during operation and maintenance activities. Recognizes when equipment performance appears incorrect or incomplete and reports findings to senior technicians or engineers for further testing and corrective action.

    • Accountability: Demonstrates responsibility for assigned work orders, tools, test equipment, and work areas. Ensures tasks are completed safely, accurately, and within the defined scope, and reports progress and issues in a timely manner.

    • Adaptability: Demonstrates reliability and willingness to learn in a power plant and waste-to-energy environment. Able to work in shifts, respond to operational demands, and adapt to technical, organizational, and environmental changes while maintaining safe working practices.

    • Problem-Solving: Supports troubleshooting of routine I&C issues related to boilers, turbines, generators, waste-handling systems, flue gas treatment, and auxiliary plant equipment by following standard procedures and guidance from senior staff. Escalates complex or abnormal conditions promptly.

    • Team Work: Works effectively within multidisciplinary operations and maintenance teams. Cooperates with senior technicians, engineers, operators, and contractors to support safe and reliable plant operation, while actively learning and sharing basic technical knowledge.
