Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Role

DBSJ is seeking an exceptional Foundation Stage Teacher to join our Early Years team. This role may be in FS1 or FS2, as we are currently shaping our staffing needs for the next academic year.

The successful candidate will be a reflective, compassionate practitioner who brings Early Years to life through a child-led, inquiry-driven approach. They will design learning environments that provoke curiosity, respond to children s interests, and scaffold deep learning through play, exploration, and warm relationships.

At DBSJ, we believe that early learning flourishes in environments where children feel secure, seen, and celebrated. Our teachers cultivate this through emotional attunement, intentional observation, and responsive planning. They view themselves not only as teachers, but as co-learners, co-researchers and architects of meaningful early experiences.

Great Early Years teaching at DBSJ is rooted in empathy, driven by professional curiosity and strengthened by strong partnerships with families and teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching & Learning

  • Plan and facilitate purposeful, play-based, and child-led experiences aligned with the EYFS and DBSJ s inquiry-driven philosophy.
  • Observe children closely and respond to their emerging interests, needs, and developmental patterns through adaptive, flexible planning.
  • Create sensory-rich, language-rich environments that support independence, creativity, collaboration, and early skill development.
  • Use formative assessment, student voice, and reflective dialogue to understand each child s learning journey.
  • Celebrate neurodiversity and individuality, ensuring all children experience success and belonging.

Contribution to School Culture

  • Build warm, trusting partnerships with families, recognising them as co-educators in the Early Years journey.
  • Collaborate within the Early Years and Primary team to ensure continuity of experiences, shared values, and a cohesive approach to learning.
  • Contribute to the welcoming atmosphere of DBSJ through modelling care, hospitality, and professionalism.
  • Participate in enrichment, whole-school events, and community initiatives that strengthen our identity as a school rooted in relationships.

Professional Growth

  • Engage actively in DBSJ s culture of professional learning, dialogue, coaching and curiosity.
  • Reflect on personal practice, valuing feedback, self-awareness and continuous improvement.
  • Embrace the belief that education - especially Early Years - is a complex, evolving landscape and adapt practice responsively.
  • Contribute to collective efficacy by sharing insights, learning and professional inquiry with colleagues.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • A recognised Early Years teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, BEd, EYT or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant teaching experience
  • Strong understanding of child development, play pedagogy, and inquiry-based learning
  • Clear alignment with DBSJ s ethos, especially our belief in child-led learning and reflective practice
  • Commitment to fostering partnerships with families and contributing to wider school life
  • Understanding of inclusive practices and developmentally responsive teaching
