Roles & Responsibilities
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Leadership & Governance:
- Provide strategic academic leadership for the Department of Psychiatry, ensuring excellence in teaching, assessment, research, and clinical integration.
- Be accountable, through established University management and governance structures, for the delivery of all academic commitments associated with the post.
- Lead the design, development, delivery, review, and continuous improvement of undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry curricula, modules, and assessments.
- Ensure alignment of departmental activities with national and international standards of medical education and training, including Medical Council requirements.
- Contribute to University-wide academic planning, quality assurance, accreditation processes, and academic policy development as required.
Teaching and Training:
- Oversee and contribute to clinical and campus-based teaching across junior, intermediate, and senior cycles of the medical programme.
- Ensure the effective delivery of teaching and training at relevant clinical sites, including responsibility for undergraduate learners.
- Provide academic leadership in student assessment, including examination design, standard setting, delivery, evaluation, and feedback processes.
- Support and mentor academic and clinical faculty within the department, fostering excellence in teaching and professional development.
- Ensure appropriate use of the virtual learning environment to support teaching, communication, and student engagement.
Clinical Leadership and Integration:
- Be accountable for the clinical component of the post as ensuring integration between academic objectives and clinical service delivery.
- Work collaboratively with Clinical Directors and hospital partners to ensure high-quality psychiatric training and service provision.
- Undertake clinical duties within designated teaching hospitals, with scope and commitment defined in agreement with relevant governance structures.
- Promote best practice in patient care, teaching, and supervision within clinical settings.
Research and Scholarly Activity:
- Provide leadership in psychiatric research, supporting departmental research strategy, grant activity, and scholarly output.
- Supervise and mentor faculty, trainees, and students in research activities.
- Contribute to the advancement of psychiatric knowledge through research, publication, and academic collaboration.
Strategic Development and External Engagement:
- Play a key role in the development and reform of medical education, training, and research, aligned with Government policy and institutional strategy.
- Collaborate across University and clinical sites, and with postgraduate bodies, regulatory authorities, and professional organisations, on international, national, and regional initiatives.
- Represent the Department and University at internal and external forums as required.
Compliance & Professional Responsibilities:
- Ensure adherence to all University, national, and regulatory policies and procedures, including health, safety, and staff welfare requirements.
- Act at all times in the best interests of the Department and University, upholding professional, ethical, and academic standards.
- Undertake such other duties as may reasonably be required in support of the role and the strategic objectives of the University.
Desired Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be a senior academic with substantial leadership experience in clinical education, service delivery, and governance, and will demonstrate the following:
- A minimum of 10 years post-internship clinical experience in Psychiatry, including senior leadership responsibilities.
- Fellowship and/or Doctoral Degree in Psychiatry from a recognised international awarding body.
- Board Certification in Psychiatry (mandatory).
- Demonstrated experience in academic leadership, including responsibility for programme delivery, curriculum oversight, and faculty supervision.
- Proven track record of undergraduate teaching, assessment design, curriculum development, and quality assurance in a medical education setting.
- Experience of educational innovation, including effective use of e-learning and virtual learning environments (VLEs).
- Evidence of research leadership, including supervision of junior faculty and trainees, scholarly output, and contribution to departmental or institutional research strategy.
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, academic governance, and regulatory standards applicable to medical education and psychiatric training.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across academic, clinical, and regulatory stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to the development and reform of medical education, training, and research, aligned with national and international standards
