Job overview
An exciting new chapter is beginning at The English School (TES), Kuwait a not-for-profit, independent, co-educational school built on over 70 years of Tradition, Excellence, and Success.TES has long been a beacon of educational excellence, known for its warm ethos, exceptional standards, and strong British values. As our school continues to expand with new facilities, increasing student numbers, and a thriving commitment to the arts and academics this is a unique and exciting moment for a talented leader to shape the future of English and Literacy at TES.

We are seeking an inspirational, energetic, and highly skilled leader to build on TES s proud academic tradition and to develop an ambitious, cohesive, and creative whole-school English programme.
The Head of English will lead the department (focusing on KS3 KS4 with strategic oversight of transition from KS2), oversee the curriculum development, and promote a culture where reading, writing, oracy, and critical thinking thrive. Working closely with the Leadership Team, you will bring clarity of vision, exceptional organisational skills, and a passion for helping young people reach their full potential through language and literature.

Our ambition is for an English department that upholds academic rigour, nurtures creativity, and provides outstanding opportunities in public speaking, debate, creative writing, and literary appreciation.

Role Responsibilities:
In addition to the wider leadership responsibilities of the role, the successful applicant will also be expected to:

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, working collaboratively with colleagues across all phases, as well as with parents and support staff, to ensure a highly tailored and supportive learning environment for every pupil.
  • Uphold and actively promote the school s core values Respect, Integrity, Confidence, Positivity, and Empathy as outlined in the TES Vision and Values framework.
  • Show an unwavering commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing, ensuring full compliance with TES safeguarding procedures and modelling the highest standards of care, conduct, and professionalism.
  • Set consistently high expectations for pupils and staff, inspiring, motivating, and challenging students to achieve excellence in literacy, literary analysis, and personal expression.
  • Lead and contribute to the school s Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) programme, ensuring English staff deliver high-quality activities (such as Debating, Book Clubs, School Magazine, or Drama), and personally running at least two of the three annual activity blocks in alignment with the school s ECA calendar.
  • Take personal responsibility for ongoing professional reflection, evaluating and refining your own practice as both a teacher and a leader, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement within the English department.

We invite you to review our Applicant Information Pack for a full overview of our School and the role.

The successful applicant will join our team for the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.

Whether you re considering your first overseas role or bring a wealth of international experience, Kuwait offers an opportunity that could positively shape your life forever. There s something special about working at TES, and Kuwait s unique charm only adds to the experience, making it a place you ll find hard to leave.

Important Information for Applicants
Female applicants: Please note an important point regarding residency and sponsorship in Kuwait. Currently, women are not permitted to sponsor dependents. This means you would not be able to sponsor a husband or children for residency in Kuwait. Conversely, a husband could also explore employment opportunities in Kuwait, and if successful, he would be able to obtain his own residency and then sponsor children.

We understand this may be a significant consideration, so we wish to be fully transparent at the point of application.

Safeguarding The English School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. As per our Safer Recruitment Policy, applicants must be prepared to undergo stringent child protection screening including, but not limited to, checks with past employers and criminal records checks.
