Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications for a full-time open rank faculty position in Humanistic and Critical Approaches to Artificial Intelligence, to be appointed in the Communication Program, with the possibility of a joint appointment in the Liberal Arts Program. We seek candidates with an active research agenda that foregrounds humanistic perspectives on Artificial Intelligence. This may include critical, historical, or theoretical perspectives on AI; AI ethics; algorithms and cultural manipulation; the introduction of critical, interpretive, humanistic, comparative or transnational methodologies in AI research; critical or humanistic perspectives on AI and media industries; or critical understandings of AI s integration with sound, robotics, digital labor, and computation.

In addition to a demonstrated research record commensurate with rank, or highly promising research trajectory for emerging candidates with a recent PhD, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Teaching expections include two courses per semester, which may include core disciplinary courses, elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contribution to NU-Q s broader curricular needs. This latter could include Research Methods, AI/Media Ethics, or courses qualifying for our university s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as AI and Media, Media and Politics, Strategic Communication, Film and Design, Middle East Studies, and Africana Studies. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NU-Q s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis Museum.
