Roles & Responsibilities

Role & responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

Diagnose and manage coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and congenital heart defects

Perform minimally invasive, catheter-based procedures, including:

  • Coronary angiography
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) / angioplasty
  • Stent placement
  • Balloon valvuloplasty
  • Thrombectomy
  • Closure of ASD, VSD, and PDA

Treat acute cardiac emergencies, especially heart attacks (STEMI/NSTEMI)

Interpret cardiac imaging and diagnostic tests such as ECG, echocardiography, stress tests, CT angiography

Manage pre- and post-procedure patient care, including medication planning and monitoring

Patient Care & Consultation

Conduct outpatient and inpatient consultations

Explain procedures, risks, benefits, and alternatives to patients and families

Obtain informed consent

Provide long-term follow-up care, lifestyle modification advice, and secondary prevention

Cath Lab Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate the cardiac catheterization laboratory team

Ensure radiation safety and sterile techniques

Select appropriate devices (catheters, guidewires, stents)

Monitor patients for procedural complications

Administrative & Quality Responsibilities

Maintain accurate medical records and procedural documentation

Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, NABH/ethical standards

Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement programs

Adhere to infection control and patient safety guidelines

Collaboration & Communication

Work closely with cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and technicians

Participate in multidisciplinary heart team meetings

Coordinate referrals and continuity of care

Emergency & On-Call Duties

Provide 24/7 on-call services for emergency angioplasty

Respond rapidly to cardiac emergencies and code blue situations

Ethical & Professional Responsibilities

Practice evidence-based medicine

Maintain patient confidentiality and ethical standards

Stay updated with latest advancements in interventional cardiology

Qualification: MS/MD
