Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Job Purpose:
The Lecturer in Animation role is focused on delivering high-quality teaching, conducting impactful research, and contributing to the academic leadership and development of innovative programs in Animation. Coordinating the preparation, delivery, review, and enhancement of the module, also responsible for undertaking the teaching duties assigned by the Dean/Head of Department, and producing learning and teaching material and delivering either across a range of modules or within a subject area. Ensures the efficient and effective delivery of teaching programs in accordance with the University s strategy, policy, and procedures, contribute to activities that influence leading-edge practice, and may also undertake research activity.
Job Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging, high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate Animation programs
- Deliver lectures, tutorials, and studio-based teaching in areas of 2D and 3D animation, Character design and rigging, Storyboarding and narrative development,Motion graphics and visual effects,Animation production pipelines and also Digital tools such as Maya, Blender, Toon Boom Harmony, and After Effects.
- Supervise student projects, dissertations, and graduation films.
- Develop and update module content aligned with industry standards and emerging digital practices.
- Utilize cutting-edge teaching methodologies, including digital tools and collaborative approaches, to foster problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Provide constructive feedback, academic advising, and student mentorship.
- Organise and participate in industry-focused events, workshops, and partnerships, including internships and collaborative projects.
- Lead and contribute to high-impact research, projects, or practice-based work with national and international recognition.
- Publish research outputs in academic journals, industry platforms, or professional conferences.
- Engage in research, publication, and creative practice in animation, digital media, or related disciplines.
- Produce peer-reviewed outputs, exhibitions, or creative artefacts that contribute to research excellence.
- Participate in interdisciplinary projects aligned with faculty priorities, such as:
- Heritage storytelling through animation, Inclusive and human-centered design, Sustainable creative practices and Digital innovation (VR/AR, motion capture, AI-based animation).
- Engage in research, creative practice, or industry-based inquiry related to Animation or spatial practices.
- Publish in peer-reviewed venues and contribute to the faculty s research profile.
- Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement and contribute/assist to the planning, design, and development of objectives and material.
- Ensure that the Module Specifications and delivery are consistent with the objectives and procedures of the Programme, University regulations, and international academic standards in learning and teaching.
- Update and actively maintain the System for the module to meet at least the minimum requirements specified by the University.
- Provide information to the relevant administrative offices by the given deadlines to facilitate timetabling and to ensure that the list of registered students is as accurate as possible prior to the start of teaching to ensure that the teaching process begins promptly.
- Ensure that new staff receive an induction to the module to ensure that they understand the learning, teaching, attendance policy, and assessment strategy including marking practice.
- Responsible for the secure printing of examination papers in sufficient quantities and secure submission to the Exam Officer.
- Supervise student projects and the academic elements progress, achievement, and attendance.
- Ensure that the TAs and administrative staff attend punctually for teaching commitments and provide suitable handouts or supporting materials to assist the students learning, including on e-learning.
- Mark work and exams promptly and accurately with reference to departmental marking criteria.
- Set assessments and formal examinations in accordance with the relevant regulations and by the published deadline.
- Ensure marks are entered on the Student Record System and are accurate and error-free.
- Perform examination supervision duties.
- Answer students' inquiries either by email or physically during office hours, ensuring proper understanding of the teaching material.
- Participate in departmental and faculty committees, accreditation processes, and quality assurance activities.
- Contribute to curriculum development, programme reviews, and strategic planning.
- Support student recruitment, portfolio evaluations, and outreach events.
- Advise students and contribute to a positive learning culture.
- Undertake various duties as assigned by Dean/Head of Department, Programme Director.
Desired Candidate Profile
Educational Qualifications:
- A PhD in Animation, Digital Media, Visual Communication, Game Design, Computer Graphics or a related field, with significant teaching, research, and industry experience.
Experience:
- 7+ Years
- A track record of regular publications in high-impact research journals
- A developing or established research portfolio relevant to animation, visual storytelling, digital media, or spatial/visual design disciplines.
- Proficiency with industry-standard animation tools (e.g., Maya, Blender, Unreal Engine, After Effects).
Technical Skills:
- Strong creative and technical skills in animation production workflows.
- Demonstrated teaching experience in higher education or a strong portfolio of industry practice.
- Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines (e.g., animation & game design, animation & interactive media).
- Awareness of current and emerging trends in 2D/3D animation, digital storytelling, and creative technologies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
- A proven ability to integrate professional practice into teaching and curriculum development.
- Experience with sustainable design, human-centred design, digital fabrication, or emerging technologies.
- Proficiency with contemporary design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, Adobe Suite).
- Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and culturally responsive design education.
- Engagement with industry networks, community partners, or interdisciplinary collaborations.
