Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Advises the delegation on the implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and on legal issues under national law in Algeria and Tunisia and/or international law.

  • He/she works under the supervision of the Deputy Head of Delegation / Regional Legal Coordinator, in collaboration with the legal advisor for operations based at ICRC headquarters.
  • He/she develops, monitors, evaluates and implements strategies to resolve identified problems and contribute to the achievement of the delegation's objectives in the legal field.
  • He/she conducts/supervises research and analysis on issues related to IHL, its integration into national law, or on other relevant branches of specific international law and on other more general aspects of the national legal system, from a comparative point of view.
  • He/she also contributes to activities on legal topics (workshops, dissemination sessions, conferences, etc.) with state authorities and academic circles.
  • He/she contributes to maintaining and developing the delegation's network of contacts among these actors.

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Ability to represent the institution in a manner consistent with its mandate and principles, to authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken French and Arabic, and good knowledge of English (including written and oral comprehension).
  • Rigour and attention to detail.
  • Curiosity of mind, organization, flexibility (versatility) and pragmatism.
  • Creativity (sense of presentation and formatting) and being proactive.
  • Five to seven years of experience in a similar position. Experience working in government is an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of National Law (criminal law, criminal procedure, etc.).
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in standard office tools: spreadsheets, word processing, presentation software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Excellent command of written and spoken French and Arabic, and good knowledge of English (including written and oral comprehension).
