Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for the mechanical integrity, installation, and repair of all poultry processing machinery. This role focuses on ensuring that the physical moving parts—conveyors, blades, gears, and pneumatic actuators—function smoothly to prevent line stoppages and ensure the highest quality of bird processing.

Key Responsibilities

1. Mechanical Maintenance & Overhaul

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on specialized poultry machinery, including Linco, Baader, and Meyn systems.

  • Replace and tension overhead conveyor chains, shackles, and drive sprockets.

  • Maintain and sharpen automated cutting blades and circular saws used in the evisceration and portioning lines.

2. Power Transmission & Hydraulics

  • Service and repair gearboxes, including oil changes, seal replacements, and shaft alignments.

  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic power units (HPUs) and cylinders used in heavy lifting or feather plucking sections.

  • Inspect and replace bearings, bushings, and drive belts to ensure smooth equipment rotation.

3. Pneumatics & Fluid Systems

  • Maintain the plant’s pneumatic network, including solenoid valves, air cylinders, and manifolds.

  • Troubleshoot air leaks and pressure drops that affect the speed of automated sorters and gates.

  • Service water pumps and high-pressure nozzles used in the scalding and cleaning stages.

4. Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform basic TIG/MIG welding (preferably Stainless Steel) for minor equipment repairs or bracket fabrication.

  • Ensure all welds are "food-grade" (smooth and crevice-free) to prevent bacterial growth.

5. Safety & Hygiene (HACCP)

  • Strict adherence to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) before any mechanical intervention.

  • Use only food-grade lubricants and ensure no oil/grease leakage enters the product stream.

  • Assist in "Dry Runs" after maintenance to ensure machines are safe for production.

Desired Candidate Profile

Education & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Vocational Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Millwrighting, or Industrial Maintenance.

  • Certification in Welding or Machining is a significant advantage.

Experience Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience as a mechanical fitter or technician in a Poultry Slaughtering or Meat Processing plant.

  • Expert knowledge of conveyor systems (overhead, belt, and screw conveyors).

  • Hands-on experience with high-speed rotating equipment and precision alignment.

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Mechanical Drives: Expertise in gearboxes, couplings, and chain drives.

  • Pneumatics: Reading circuit diagrams and repairing air actuators.

  • Fabrication: Proficient in using hand tools, power tools, and basic welding.

  • Diagnostics: Ability to "hear" mechanical failure before it occurs (bearing wear, belt slippage).
