Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Microbiology Registrar is responsible for assisting in the diagnosis, prevention, and control of infectious diseases through microbiological laboratory investigations. The role involves performing and supervising microbiological tests, interpreting results, providing clinical advice to physicians, and supporting infection control activities within the hospital.


Key Responsibilities


Laboratory Services

  • Perform and supervise routine and specialized microbiological investigations.

  • Analyse clinical specimens including blood, urine, sputum, tissue, and other body fluids.

  • Ensure accurate identification of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.

  • Validate and interpret laboratory results before reporting.


Clinical Support

  • Provide consultation to clinicians regarding microbiological findings and infection management.

  • Recommend appropriate antimicrobial therapy based on laboratory results.

  • Assist in diagnosing infectious diseases.


Infection Prevention & Control

  • Participate in hospital infection control programs.

  • Monitor hospital-acquired infections and outbreaks.

  • Assist in surveillance of antimicrobial resistance patterns.


Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure laboratory procedures comply with hospital policies and accreditation standards.

  • Maintain proper documentation and laboratory records.

  • Participate in quality assurance and laboratory audits.


Training & Education

  • Support training of laboratory staff, interns, and junior doctors.

  • Participate in clinical meetings, case discussions, and academic activities.


Research & Development

  • Participate in clinical research and microbiology-related studies.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory practices.


Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.

  • Postgraduate qualification in Medical Microbiology (MD / MSc / equivalent).

  • Valid medical license or eligibility for licensing by the Kuwait Ministry of Health.

  • Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory.


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of microbiological diagnostic techniques.

  • Understanding of infection control principles.

  • Ability to interpret laboratory data and provide clinical guidance.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Knowledge of antimicrobial stewardship.


Working Conditions

  • Hospital-based laboratory environment.

  • May involve on-call duties or emergency laboratory support.
