Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
Main Accountabilities:
- Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevention. Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
- Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood.
- Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients, through daily visits , consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient s evolution.
- Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
- Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patients illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material.
- Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
- Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
- Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary.
Clinical Management
- Provide comprehensive medical consultations (at enrolment and follow-up visit) for diagnosed T1DM patients
- Confirm diagnosis and review individual treatment plans (insulin regimen, dose adjustment, follow-up schedule).
- Monitor glycemic control (HbA1c, SMBG records) and address acute and long-term complications (such as DKA, hypoglycemia, nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, infections etc ).
- Assess adherence, address the gaps and barriers for non-adherence and adapt management based on patient progress.
- Ensure availability and correct use of insulin, glucose strips, and monitoring devices.
- Ensure clear guidance of the PSEC for individualized plan for each patient, implement sick-day rules, and emergency management protocols.
- Contribute to the development and review of SOPs, clinical guidelines, and educational materials.
- Ensure transition planning for adolescents moving to adult diabetes services.
Coordination & Referral
- Coordinate with the social worker for referrals to medical (endocrinology, ophthalmology, nephrology, admissions, etc.) and non-medical services (protection, fast tracking, food, legal and financial support, .) when needed.
- Refer patients with adherences challenges to the assigned team
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions with the PSEC nurse, psychologist, and social worker.
Patient Education
- Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to the team (nurses, MHPSS and HP team)
- Provide age-appropriate education and collaborate with the health promotion team for their questions, patient advice, messages, materials used when needed.
- Deliver individualized education and counselling to patients and caregivers during consultations.
- Participate to group education sessions on diabetes management, prevention of complications, and lifestyle adaptation if needed.
Monitoring, Reporting & Quality of Care
- Ensure accurate and confidential clinical documentation in patient files and digital systems.
- Monitor and report key indicators (e.g., HbA1c, DKA rate, follow-up rate).
- Participate in clinical audits to improve quality of care.
- Collaborate with M&E and medical coordination teams for data analysis and reporting.
Desired Candidate Profile
Education:
- Bachelor s degree in medicine with specialized diploma or fellowship in pediatrics (mandatory)
- Masters in Pediatrics (desirable)
- Experience:
- Minimum 2 years experience as a practicing Pediatrician
- Experience in pediatric endocrinology is desirable
