Phlebotomist Roles & Responsibilities / Job Description

A Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples from patients for laboratory testing, blood donation, transfusion, or research purposes while ensuring patient safety and comfort.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

• Collect blood samples from patients using venipuncture and capillary techniques.
• Verify patient identity and ensure correct labeling of specimens.
• Maintain proper hygiene, infection control, and safety protocols during procedures.
• Prepare patients before blood collection and explain procedures clearly.
• Handle, store, and transport specimens according to laboratory standards.
• Maintain accurate patient records and documentation.
• Monitor patients for adverse reactions during or after blood collection.
• Ensure all equipment and supplies are clean, sterilized, and properly maintained.
• Coordinate with laboratory staff, nurses, and doctors regarding sample requirements.
• Follow hospital, clinic, and laboratory policies and quality standards.
• Dispose of biomedical waste safely according to regulations.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information.

Qualification Requirements

• Diploma/Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or related field
• Certification in Phlebotomy (preferred)
• Relevant clinical or hospital experience preferred
