Roles & Responsibilities

The BIW Process Engineering Manager will lead the Body-in-White (BIW) process engineering team through new model launches, process validation, and production readiness. This role ensures robust process design, seamless handover from manufacturing engineering to operations, and continuous improvement of joining technologies and body assembly systems. The successful candidate will drive process capability, ensure product integrity, and deliver on shop KPIs.

You Will:

  • Lead the validation and handover of BIW processes from launch into serial production.

  • Ensure all process documentation (PFMEA, Control Plans, Standard Work, Process Flows) is complete, accurate, and production-ready.

  • Coordinate build events, trial runs, and quality audits to confirm process stability and product integrity.

  • Collaborate with Operations, ME, and Quality to verify line readiness and resolve early build issues.

  • Manage and develop a team of process engineers and specialists across BIW areas (underbody, framing, closures, etc.).

  • Provide technical coaching, performance reviews, and career development planning for your team.

  • Establish clear engineering goals aligned with program deliverables and plant KPI targets.

  • Oversee joining processes such as spot welding, laser welding, MIG/MAG welding, hemming, riveting, and adhesive bonding.

  • Implement, monitor, and audit process controls for compliance and effectiveness.

  • Drive ergonomic validation, cycle time optimization, and error-proofing initiatives.

  • Conduct capability studies and ensure Cpk/Ppk targets are achieved for critical characteristics.

  • Interface with Product Engineering, Launch, Quality, Production, Maintenance, and Supply Chain to ensure seamless process integration.

  • Influence product design through early Design for Manufacturing (DFM/A) reviews.

  • Coordinate process changes and line upgrades with minimal impact to production.

  • Lead structured problem-solving efforts (8D, 5-Why, fishbone) for process and quality issues.

  • Drive continuous improvement projects focused on productivity, quality, and cost reduction.

  • Capture and implement lessons learned from launches into future programs.

  • Monitor and report BIW process KPIs, including cycle time, FPY, weld integrity, tool utilization, and changeover performance.

  • Support internal and external audits (BIQ, LPA, customer) with accurate process data and documentation.

  • Provide regular status updates to plant leadership and global manufacturing engineering.

Desired Candidate Profile

You Bring:

  • Bachelor s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering (Master s preferred).

  • 8 12 years of experience in BIW process engineering within the automotive industry, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.

  • Deep knowledge of BIW tooling, fixtures, automation, and joining processes.

  • Proficiency in PFMEA, Control Plans, Process Audits, and quality gates.

  • Familiarity with CAD tools, MES systems, and digital manufacturing platforms.

  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to coach and develop engineering teams.

  • Excellent problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and communication abilities.

  • Flexibility to support off-shift and weekend operations during build events or critical phases.
