Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Core Accountabilities:

  • Product Formulation & Development:

    • Develop and refine cosmetic formulations (e.g., foundations, lip products, eyeshadows, primers) that meet target performance, texture, shade range, and stability requirements.

    • Create prototypes, batch records, and detailed formulation documentation for internal review and scale-up.

    • Conduct bench and instrumental testing to evaluate color, wear, transfer, viscosity, particle size, and stability under accelerated and real-time conditions.

  • Quality, Safety & Regulatory Compliance:

    • Ensure formulations comply with applicable cosmetic regulations, ingredient restrictions, and labeling requirements for target markets.

    • Work with the quality and regulatory teams to maintain safety assessments, technical files, and supporting documentation for claims substantiation.

    • Support stability, preservative efficacy, and microbiological testing; implement corrective actions when results do not meet specifications.

  • Product Testing & Consumer Insights:

    • Coordinate and support in-vivo and consumer testing (wear trials, sensory panels, shade matching) and capture actionable feedback to guide formulation and shade decisions.

    • Analyze test data to recommend formulation adjustments, packaging changes, or claim refinements that improve consumer satisfaction and product performance.

    • Collaborate with merchandising and marketing to translate consumer insights into product features and positioning.

  • Supplier & Manufacturing Coordination:

    • Partner with suppliers and contract manufacturers to source raw materials, colorants, pigments, and packaging components that meet quality and cost targets.

    • Support tech transfers and scale-up activities, including creation of manufacturing instructions, batch sizes, and process parameters.

    • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and work cross-functionally to resolve production or supply constraints.

  • Documentation, Costing & Launch Readiness:

    • Maintain accurate formulation files, specifications, cost sheets, and change control records in accordance with company procedures.

    • Estimate component and manufacturing costs to support margin analysis and pricing decisions with merchandising and finance.

    • Prepare technical inputs for packaging artwork, claims, and labeling; support cross-functional launch checklists to ensure timely product introductions.

Desired Candidate Profile

Experience:

  • 3+ years of cosmetic product development experience, preferably with makeup/formulation roles in beauty, personal care, or CPG environments.

  • Hands-on experience with formulation lab work, pilot-scale batches, and stability/testing protocols.

  • Familiarity with cosmetic ingredient functions, color science, and common raw materials used in makeup products.

Core Competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of formulation chemistry, preservative systems, and stability testing methodologies.

  • Analytical & Problem-Solving: Ability to interpret test results, troubleshoot formulation/manufacturing issues, and recommend data-driven solutions.

  • Project Management: Organized approach to managing multiple development projects, timelines, and documentation deliverables.

  • Creativity & Consumer Focus: Strong aesthetic sensibility and commitment to developing products that meet consumer needs and brand positioning.

Personal Attributes:

  • Detail-oriented, methodical, and committed to high standards of quality and reproducibility.

  • Collaborative team member who builds effective working relationships across functions and with external partners.

  • Adaptable and resourceful, comfortable working in a fast-paced product development environment with changing priorities.
