Roles & Responsibilities
The BIW Production Shift Manager leads and manages all production activities during the assigned shift in the Body-in-White shop. This position plays a critical role in ensuring production targets are met safely, efficiently, and with high quality, while leading a team of supervisors, team leaders, and operators.
You Will:
- Lead all production activities in the BIW shop during the assigned shift, ensuring adherence to production schedules and build targets.
- Ensure proper execution of standard work, shift start-up routines, and process checks.
- Manage flow of materials, manpower, and equipment to maintain line balance and takt time adherence.
- Supervise and develop a team of production supervisors, team leaders, and hourly operators.
- Provide coaching and direction on safety, quality, productivity, and discipline matters.
- Lead shift handover meetings, ensuring clear communication of priorities, issues, and action items.
- Enforce compliance with all safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE standards.
- Ensure operators follow quality standards and inspection processes to detect and correct defects in real-time.
- Conduct layered process audits and ensure containment plans are in place when required.
- Respond quickly to production line stoppages and escalate critical issues to Engineering, Maintenance, or Quality as needed.
- Participate in root cause investigations and corrective action implementation for process and quality issues.
- Collaborate with other departments to resolve equipment, staffing, or material constraints.
- Track and report shift-level KPIs (e.g., OEE, First Pass Yield, Scrap, Downtime, Attendance, Safety Incidents).
- Ensure accurate documentation of downtime events, quality defects, and operator feedback.
- Drive shift-level continuous improvement through data analysis and operator engagement.
- Work closely with Maintenance, Quality, Logistics, and Engineering to ensure smooth operations and readiness for upcoming shifts.
- Support new model launches and trials during off-shift and weekend builds.
- Participate in daily production review meetings and support plant-wide initiatives.
Desired Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate brings strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and experience managing high-volume automated manufacturing environments.
You Bring:
- Bachelor s degree in em>Mechanical/em>, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering preferred (or equivalent experience).
- 5 8 years of automotive manufacturing experience, with at least 2 years in a frontline supervisory or shift leader role.
- In-depth understanding of BIW processes including spot welding, MIG/MAG welding, hemming, sealer application, and robot-based em>automation/em>.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Experience with lean manufacturing tools and continuous improvement.
- Working knowledge of MES systems, production reporting tools, and LPA protocols.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and extended hours during launch and high-volume periods.
