The School of Economics and Management (SEM) is a dynamic academic hub dedicated to preparing the next generation of economists, policymakers, and business leaders. Its curriculum blends economics, big data, AI, fintech, and sustainability to address global and regional challenges.
Position
HBKU seeks applications for the position of Professor of Economics and Director. The Professor will be responsible for providing academic and strategic leadership for the School of Economics, including the development and delivery of graduate programs in economics, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across HBKU colleges, as well as with local, regional, and international stakeholders.
A key responsibility of the role is to lead the School s academic planning, accreditation, and program delivery, oversee faculty recruitment and development, manage student admissions, and allocate academic and research resources effectively. The Director will lay the foundation for future academic and research initiatives in economics, aligning the School s mission with Qatar s National Vision 2030 and national priorities in economic development, sustainability, financial stability, and policy innovation.
The role supports HBKU s mission to foster innovative, value-based, and globally relevant education and research excellence. The successful candidate will contribute to HBKU s academic portfolio, which is known for developing and delivering high-quality academic programs, as well as cultivating future economists, researchers, and policymakers to drive sustainable economic advancement in Qatar, the region, and beyond.
Job Role Description
- Provide academic leadership for the School of Economics, including strategic planning, quality assurance, and continuous program enhancement.
- Supervise independent study activities to guide students in achieving their academic and professional goals.
- Teach assigned courses or seminars in economics and related fields to support student learning.
- Serve as an academic advisor to students in course selection, thesis supervision, and career development.
- Serve on and chair the relevant School and university committees, contributing to institutional governance and decision-making.
- Render service to the professional and broader community relevant to the discipline of economics.
- Direct and mentor graduate research programs, advising students on research design and methodology.
- Conduct high-quality research in the field of specialization and publish findings in leading scholarly journals.
- Participate in faculty committees related to curriculum planning, degree requirements, and academic policy, and perform related administrative duties.
- Lead curriculum development activities, including the design of new courses, programs, and innovative instructional methods.
- Undertake scholarly activity that contributes to HBKU s ambition to be a leading research university.
- Supervise research projects and theses to ensure successful research outcomes and student progression.
- Seek and secure external funding to support research excellence and strengthen HBKU s global research standing.
Desired Candidate Profile
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Ph.D. in Economics or a closely related discipline from an accredited university.
- 10 12 years of relevant full-time university teaching and research experience, or closely related experience in industry or policy institutions, with evidence of increasing academic leadership and productivity.
- Strong evidence of excellence in teaching, PhD student supervision, curriculum design, and academic program development.
- Research and scholarly achievements meeting the standards required for appointment at the rank of Professor, comparable to peers at major research universities.
- Continued participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of universities, professional societies, or relevant organizations.
- Strong and growing portfolio of scholarly outputs, including large-funded research grants, peer-reviewed publications in CABS-ranked 4* and 3*, and FT top 50 journals.
- Clear evidence of an increasing regional and international reputation in economics or a relevant subfield.
- Demonstrated ability to work with and lead diverse academic teams, cultures, and communities.
- Active engagement in building networks and collaborations within HBKU, and with national and international academic and research partners.
- Special consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in Quantitative Economics, especially applying advanced data analytics, AI, machine learning, predictive analytics techniques, and applying data-driven economic modelling to real-world economic problems.
- Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
Additional Requirements/Skills
- Demonstrated leadership experience in academic administration (e.g., Program Director, Department Chair, Research Director, Associate Dean, or equivalent).
- Ability to develop and lead research agendas aligned with national development priorities and global economic challenges.
- Experience integrating innovative teaching and research practices, including the use of digital tools and emerging technologies in economics, education, and research.
- Commitment to supervising graduate theses and fostering high-quality, internationally visible, and where relevant, bilingual scholarship.
