Roles & Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The Radio Operator is responsible for managing radio communications, maintaining radio equipment, and providing support for emergency response and logistics coordination.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Radio Communication Management:

  • Receives and transmits messages between rig and shore bases, supply vessels, helicopters, and other stations by radio-telephone.
  • Operates & monitors radio communications systems including VHF, HF, and UHF radios for pertinent transmissions.
  • Provide telephone, radio, e-mail, fax and telex communications on behalf of the company, the Operator and service companies.
  • Monitor radio frequencies and channels to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and prevent interference with other communications.
  • Coordinate and control the isolation of radio equipment during periods of radio silence.

Radio Equipment Maintenance:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on radio equipment, including inspections, testing, and calibration, to ensure that it is in good working condition and complies with regulatory requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and repair radio equipment malfunctions or faults, coordinating with external technicians or vendors as needed to resolve issues.
  • Test the standby radio equipment and the radio equipment in the lifeboats including checking of the radio room batteries as per the company procedures.

Logistics Coordination:

  • Establish and maintain radio contact with helicopter traffic to and from the rig. Advise pilots on landing clearances & meteorological conditions and record in the helicopter movement log.
  • Inform the HLO and control room (where applicable) of all intended helicopter traffic to the installation.
  • Assist with logistics coordination activities, including coordinating crew changes, and supply deliveries, using radio communication systems to relay information between the rig and support vessels or onshore bases.
  • Maintain accurate records of helicopter movements, crew transfers, and cargo shipments to ensure smooth and efficient logistics operations.

Emergency Response Support:

  • Test the standby radio equipment and the radio equipment in the lifeboats including checking of the radio room batteries as per the company procedures.
  • Serve as a key member of the rig's emergency response team, providing communication support during emergency situations such as well control incidents, medical emergencies, and evacuations.
  • Coordinate communication between rig personnel, emergency response teams, and external authorities to ensure timely and effective response to emergencies.
  • Maintain a radio watch on maritime and aeronautical emergency frequencies.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Maintain records/logs of all radio communications to and from the rig. Keep records of telephone charges from the installation (if applicable).

Administrative Duties:

  • Obtains weather reports and information on weather conditions from different locations as required.
  • Provide clerical/administrative support to the OIM as required.
  • Organizes and directs boarding/offboarding and movement of personnel on the helicopter / boat as per safety guidelines.
  • Maintain up-to-date personnel on board and room assignment lists, where applicable.
  • Fully aware of his role on abandon ship, fire, and injured personal emergencies.

Job Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum education level required: High School or Vocational / Technical education.
  • Minimum two (2) years of working relevant communications experience gained either on an Offshore Rig, Merchant or Royal Navy.

Skills/Competencies Required:

  • Fluent in English language (written & spoken).
  • PC Literate in Microsoft Office.
  • Communications, Situation Awareness, Teamwork, Time management / Managing work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Rarely climbing (stairs, ladders).
  • Rarely bending, twisting, and standing.
  • Ability to work in day/night shift.

Certifications:

  • Valid GMDSS Certificate
  • As per ADES Training Matrix
