Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

  • . Maternal and Neonatal Clinical Assessment


    • Conduct scheduled home visits (typically within 48–72 hours and again between days 7–14 post-discharge) and additional visits as clinically indicated.

    • Perform comprehensive maternal assessment:

    • Uterine involution, lochia characteristics, and perineal/caesarean wound healing.

    • Bladder and bowel function, hydration, and nutrition.

    • Breast examination, milk production, and breastfeeding technique evaluation.

    • Screen for postpartum blues, depression, or anxiety using validated tools (e.g., EPDS).

    • Perform comprehensive newborn assessment:

    • General appearance, tone, temperature, feeding pattern, and elimination.

    • Growth monitoring: weight, length, and head circumference plotted on WHO growth charts.

    • Check umbilical cord healing, skin condition, and signs of jaundice or infection.

    • Identify and escalate any maternal or neonatal red flags promptly to the obstetrician, neonatologist and paediatrician.

    • Ensure completion of required neonatal screenings (hearing, metabolic, and others per DOH policy).


    2. Health Education, Empowerment, and Family Support


    • Provide individualized education on:

    • Exclusive breastfeeding techniques and positioning.

    • Safe infant sleep, cord care, hygiene, and immunization schedule.

    • Maternal self-care, nutrition, rest, emotional wellbeing, and physical recovery.

    • Deliver culturally sensitive counselling, respecting family beliefs and privacy.

    • Guide families on danger signs requiring urgent hospital review.

    • Promote partner/family involvement in newborn and maternal support.

    • Reinforce importance of family planning and postpartum follow-up appointments.


    3. Documentation, Communication, and Reporting


    • Record all assessments, vital signs, education, and interventions in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and community nursing register.

    • Ensure secure handling of patient data in compliance with DOH Health Information and Cybersecurity Policy.

    • Submit daily/weekly visit summaries and incident reports to the Nurse Manager.

    • Maintain effective communication and case handover with hospital-based teams, including obstetricians, paediatricians, lactation consultants, and quality officers.

    • Participate in data submission for DOH KPIs, including visit timeliness, maternal satisfaction, and breastfeeding rates

    . Quality, Safety, and Infection Control


    • Conduct home visits in compliance with infection prevention and control standards.

    • Utilize checklists for Postnatal Risk Assessment and Home Visit Safety Protocols.

    • Participate in clinical audits, incident reporting, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) projects.

    • Contribute to departmental quality indicators such as:

      Timely visit completion rate (≥95%)

      Patient satisfaction ≥90%

      Exclusive breastfeeding at 14 days ≥75%

    • Support risk management through early identification of complications and appropriate escalation.

    5. Professional Development and Competency


    • Maintain valid DOH licensure and certifications in BLS, PROMPT, and NRP.

    • Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) focused on maternal-child health, lactation management, and community outreach.

    • Participate in hospital in-service training, drills, and competency assessments.

    • Mentor junior nurses or students in postnatal and community nursing practice.

    • Demonstrate leadership in patient advocacy and evidence-based care.


    6. Teamwork and Collaboration


    • Coordinate with the maternity, Pediatric, Neonate and community outreach teams to ensure seamless care transition from hospital to home.

    • Liaise with social workers, dietitians, and mental health professionals when psychosocial or nutritional support is required.

    • Contribute to program meetings, case reviews, and interdisciplinary discussions.

    Support hospital initiatives on maternal health promotion and community engagement

Desired Candidate Profile

  • Education Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Midwifery from an accredited institution.

  • Licensure Valid Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH) license as Registered Nurse / Midwife.

  • Experience Minimum 2 years in maternity, obstetric, or community nursing practice.

  • Training PROMPT, NRP, Postpartum Care, and Lactation Support mandatory.

  • Language Proficiency in both English and Arabic.

  • Skills Clinical assessment, documentation, communication, empathy, patient education, and cultural competence.

  • IT Competence EMR systems.

  • Have an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates.

  • Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card. 

  • Be willing to work in related departments when necessary. 

  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English & Arabic (spoken and written)


DESIRABLE: The post holder should have:

  • Evidenced ability to work as part of an inter-professional team.

Organizational and administrative skills with which to use the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation
