Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Key Activities

Research Activities

  • Conduct research to design and validate new concepts, systems, and methodologies for ATM, focusing on operational efficiency and safety.
  • Explore emerging technologies, conducting feasibility studies and simulations to assess their practicality and potential impact.
  • Align research activities with aviation safety regulations and international standards (e.g., ICAO, EASA).
  • Perform evaluations of technical, financial, and operational feasibility for selected ideas in collaboration with relevant departments and stakeholders.

Concept Developmental Activities

  • Ensure research outcomes are compatible with existing ATM systems and aligned with operational requirements.
  • Design and develop prototypes and experimental systems to evaluate and refine innovative technologies.
  • Validate advanced concepts, methodologies, and tools through comprehensive testing and analysis.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety evaluations to address potential implications of proposed solutions.

Implementation Activities

  • Collaborate closely with engineers, operations specialists, and external regulatory bodies to transition research outputs into practical applications.
  • Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders through reports, technical papers, and presentations.
  • Support Proof of Concept (PoC) initiatives by refining solutions based on test results to meet success criteria and quality standards.
  • Assist in integrating validated research outputs into operational tools, systems, or products to enhance SANS s capabilities.

Knowledge Dissemination

  • Publish research findings in technical journals, white papers, and industry conferences to establish SANS as a leader in ATM innovation.
  • Organise workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions to disseminate insights and foster collaboration across internal and external teams.
  • Provide technical input to the Knowledge & Insights team to support the development of research-driven strategies.

Policies, Processes and Procedures

  • Conduct day-to-day activities while ensuring compliance to policies and procedures
  • Contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of systems, processes taking into account leading practices, changes in business environment, cost reduction and productivity improvement

Desired Candidate Profile

Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum to no prior years of experience in Research & Development.

Preferred Experience:

  • Conducting applied research in aviation, aerospace, or similar high-technology domains.
  • Expertise in advanced simulation, modelling techniques, or experimental design relevant to air navigation systems and technologies.

Preferred knowledge:

  • publishing research, contributing to innovation, and participating in collaborative R&D projects involving multidisciplinary teams.

Education and Certifications

  • Bachlor s degree in aerospace engineering, Air Traffic Management, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Preferred experience :

  • conducting applied research in aviation, aerospace, or similar high-technology domains is desirable.

Preferred Advanced training or certifications:

  • research methodologies, data analysis, or specialized areas such as artificial intelligence, systems modelling, or operational research.
