Rotating Equipment, Pump Overhauling Technician

Role Objective

To execute end-to-end pump overhauling activities including dismantling, inspection, dimensional analysis, refurbishment, assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting, ensuring reliability and compliance with OEM and industry standards - High level of understanding in paired angular contact bearing setting.

Key Responsibilities

1. Dismantling & Initial Inspection

• Safe dismantling of centrifugal, multistage, vertical, and split-case pumps
• Identification and tagging of components to maintain traceability
• Visual inspection for:
• Wear, erosion, cavitation, corrosion
• Shaft scoring, sleeve damage, impeller wear
• Preparation of initial inspection report with photographic evidence

2. Dimensional Inspection & Measurement

• Accurate measurement of all critical components using:
• Micrometers (OD/ID)
• Bore gauges
• Vernier calipers
• Dial indicators
• Recording measurements in micron-level tolerances (m)
• Checking:
• Shaft runout, bend, and journal wear
• Bearing fits (housing & shaft)
• Impeller clearances (wear ring / casing)
• Bush clearances (radial & axial)
• Preparation of detailed dimensional inspection report

3. NDT & Condition Assessment

• Conduct Dye Penetrant (DP) Testing for:
• Pump casing (body)
• Impellers
• Shafts and critical components
• Identify cracks, porosity, or structural defects
• Recommend:
• Repair (metal stitching, welding, sleeve fitment)
• Replacement

4. Refurbishment vs Replacement Analysis

• Perform technical evaluation for each component:
• Reusability
• Repair feasibility
• Replacement requirement
• Prepare refurbishment plan, including:
• Machining scope
• Sleeve installation
• Wear ring replacement
• Bush renewal
• Ensure cost-effective and technically sound decisions

5. Machining & Raw Material Planning

• Prepare list of raw materials required, such as:
• Stainless steel grades (SS410, SS316, Duplex, etc.)
• Bronze / Gunmetal for bushes
• EN series steels for shafts/sleeves
• Define machining tolerances and fits:
• Interference / transition fits for bearings & sleeves
• Coordinate with machine shop for precision work

6. Assembly & Clearance Control

• Assemble pumps as per OEM standards and best practices
• Maintain and verify:
• Bearing internal clearance / preload
• Impeller axial setting
• Wear ring clearance
• Bush clearances
• Ensure correct tightening sequence and torque practices
• Maintain cleanliness and contamination control during assembly

7. Alignment & Installation

• Perform laser alignment of pump and motor
• Achieve alignment within acceptable tolerances (angular & offset)
• Soft foot correction and baseplate checks

8. Testing & Performance Verification

• Conduct trial runs and monitor:
• Vibration levels
• Bearing temperatures
• Noise and abnormal behavior
• Identify and rectify issues before dispatch

9. Troubleshooting & Failure Analysis

• Diagnose root causes for:
• High vibration
• Bearing overheating
• Seal failures
• Misalignment and imbalance
• Provide corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)

10. Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare comprehensive reports including:
• Inspection reports
• Dimensional reports (in microns)
• NDT reports
• Final assembly and test reports
• Maintain job records for traceability and audit

11. Valve Maintenance (Preferred Skill)

• Basic overhauling of industrial valves:
• Seat lapping
• Gland packing replacement
• Leak testing

Additional Responsibilities (Important for a High-Quality Workshop)

• Maintain tools and measuring instruments in calibrated condition
• Follow safety procedures and workshop discipline
• Assist in inventory control and spare management
• Ensure housekeeping and 5S practices
• Support junior technicians and trainees
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings
• Hands-on experience with precision measurement tools
• Practical exposure to different pump types:
• Multistage pumps
• Split-case pumps
• Vertical turbine pumps
