Roles & Responsibilities

1.1 Job Scope Summary

 

The Senior I&C Technician performs hands-on maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation and control systems. The role combines technical expertise with supervisory and coordination responsibilities, guiding junior technicians and assisting the Maintenance Manager in planning, monitoring, and reporting I&C maintenance activities. This ensures safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment.


1.2 Job Responsibilities

 

Technical & Hands-On

  • Performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of instrument application, operation, and the electrical and mechanical principles involved in repair, testing, and calibration

  • Maintains alarms and automatic shutdown systems activated by one or more process variables

  • Troubleshoots and analyzes PLC and DCS logic circuitry, along with pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems

  • Conducts installation, inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of instrumentation and control systems (sensors, transmitters, analyzers, PLCs, HMIs, control valves, SCADA/DCS interfaces)

  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on assigned I&C equipment

  • Conduct daily plant inspections, walkdowns, and log operational anomalies

  • Plans details of assigned jobs using sketches, blueprints, schematics, and complex drawings

  • Consults with operations and technical groups on safety procedures and job hazards

  • Calibrate valves, MOVs, transmitters, analyzers, and other field instrumentation

  • Assist in testing and commissioning of new I&C equipment

  • Maintain and update equipment documentation, including drawings, certificates, and procedures

Supervisory & Coordination

  • Provide guidance, mentoring, and technical support to junior I&C technicians

  • Coordinate I&C work assignments under the direction of the Maintenance Manager

  • Track, monitor, and report on maintenance activities, highlighting issues or delays

  • Assist in supervising external technicians or contractors during maintenance activities

  • Support planning and scheduling of preventive and corrective maintenance

  • Assist the Maintenance Manager in spare parts management, procurement, and budget preparation


C. Compliance, Safety & Reporting

  • Ensure all I&C activities comply with HSE requirements, company procedures, and operational standards

  • Record all maintenance work accurately in the CMMS or ERP system

  • Conduct basic risk assessments and participate in plant safety meetings

  • Prepare reports on plant performance, maintenance trends, and incidents


1.3 Educational/Professional Qualifications/Training Certifications

·       Diploma in Engineering or equivalent certifications

·       HSE accredited training qualifications


1.4 Job Experience & Software Competencies

·       5–8 years of experience in I&C maintenance, preferably in industrial, power generation, or Waste-to-Energy facilities

·       Diploma or degree in Instrumentation & Control, Electrical, or related engineering discipline

·       Hands-on experience with PLCs, SCADA/DCS, sensors, transmitters, analyzers, valves, MOVs, and other field instruments

·       Knowledge of electrical systems, process control, N.E.C., ISA standards, DC, and emergency systems

·       Knowledge of HSE standards, procedures, and plant safety requirements

·       Experience supervising or mentoring junior technicians

·       Knowledge of environmental controls and equipment

·       Proficient or familiar with systems used for I&C maintenance, monitoring, and reporting, e.g as below.,:

-        Maintenance & Asset Management: IBM Maximo, Infor EAM, CMMS tools

-        Control & Operations Systems:

-        Advanced Process Control (APC)

-        Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

-        Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

-        Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)

-        ERP / Work Order Systems: SAP PM, Oracle Maintenance, or equivalent

-        Productivity & Reporting: MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint

 

1.5 Core Competencies

·       Safety Focus: Leads by example in enforcing power plant and waste-to-energy safety rules, including permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and environmental safety requirements. Actively leads toolbox talks, mentors junior staff on safe work practices, and ensures safety compliance during complex and high-risk I&C activities.

·       Technical Expertise: Possesses advanced practical knowledge of power plant and waste-to-energy instrumentation and control systems, including sensors, transmitters, control valves, PLC/DCS systems, analyzers, interlocks, and safety systems. Independently performs complex calibration, testing, troubleshooting, loop checking, commissioning, and modification works in accordance with approved procedures and standards.

  • Processing Details (Analysis/Reasoning): Analyzes complex instrument signals, control loops, alarms, and system behavior to identify root causes of faults and performance deviations. Detects incomplete, incorrect, or unreliable instrumentation and control logic and determines appropriate testing, adjustment, repair, or improvement actions.

  • Accountability: Demonstrates strong ownership of assigned systems, maintenance activities, and plant areas. Ensures work is executed to high technical and safety standards, validates work completed by junior technicians and contractors, and ensures accurate documentation and reporting.

  • Adaptability: Demonstrates high reliability and ability to perform under pressure in a power plant and waste-to-energy environment. Effectively manages technical, operational, and organizational changes, supports shift operations, and adapts to evolving plant conditions and priorities.

  • Problem-Solving: Leads troubleshooting and resolution of complex I&C issues related to boilers, turbines, generators, waste-handling systems, flue gas treatment, and auxiliary plant equipment. Applies systematic root-cause analysis and develops corrective and preventive actions aligned with operational and safety requirements.

  • Team Work: Acts as a technical leader within multidisciplinary operations and maintenance teams. Guides and mentors junior technicians, coordinates with engineers, operators, and contractors, and promotes knowledge sharing to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operation.
