Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Explorer works in the Exploration Conventional Oil / Gas Teams (XES). The person may take on the role of project lead which may involve leading an informal team of 2-3 explorers and a wider network of part-time resources. As one of the senior members of the Team, he/she will be accountable for:

  • Delivery of Contingent Resources to the assets. This involves all or a subset of the following activities:
    • Maturation of leads to drill-worthy prospects (X-ORP Step 3)
    • Maturation of well proposals (X-ORP Step 4)
    • Monitor drilling of Exploration/Appraisal wells and provide geological input during drilling.
    • Post-drill well valuations, and maturation of discoveries, in close cooperation with Petroleum Engineering staff (X-ORP Step 5).
  • Definition, coordination and execution of subsurface studies in support of above activities.
  • Identification and application of appropriate new technology and use of external knowledge/networks to achieve above.
  • Optimize the use of seismic and drilling resources to meet team objectives.
  • Engage with the New Opportunities Team (XEO) for hand-over over of leads and play-level information sharing.
  • Engage with Well Engineering for successful planning and drilling of wells, and asset staff for handover of a discovery.
  • Present results and provide technical recommendations to PDO management and shareholders.
  • Development of competence and confidence of junior explorers. PDO exploration has an excellent track record of on-the-job coaching. Good communication and coaching skills are vital for enjoyment, fulfillment & success.
  • Provide quality control of team output and databases, and identify data management improvement initiatives.
  • Provide proactive technical advice and assistance across exploration development within and outside the team.
  • Use expertise in own specialist area to raise the quality of evaluations and Geosciences generally.

All activities will be executed within the PDO HSSE framework with no impact to people or the environment

Desired Candidate Profile

Proven track record in Exploration Geosciences and with strong seismic Interpretation skills is essential. The position requires strong technical and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate geological issues to others. PDO Exploration has a large contingent of junior Omani staff, and it is expected that the successful candidate has a track record and passion for coaching. Specifically:

  • Degree or Postgraduate training (M.Sc./PhD) in Geology/Geophysics or related science with minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • A geoscientist able to integrate seismic to identify and de-risk opportunities, undertake multi-scenario interpretations, velocity analyses and T/Z conversion.
  • Workstation-based multi volume seismic interpretation and visualization workflows in an Exploration setting.
  • Deep knowledge of nDI, and preferably the Landmark DecisionSpace suite of products
  • Well-rounded Geoscientist experienced in all aspects of play-based evaluation concepts and methods, with ability to rapidly analyze and identify critical success factors, then focus on these to efficiently develop the opportunity.
  • Prior hands-on knowledge and experience on Oman geology and experience of the XORP process is definitely an advantage
  • Skill in Pore Pressure Prediction for exploration is required
  • Breadth of experience sufficient enough to explore in a wide variety of stratigraphies, sedimentologies & structural and stratigraphic trap domains.
  • Ability to collaborate with experts to integrate information from a variety of disciplines (specialist geology to petroleum engineering) into a consistent subsurface model, highlighting key risks and uncertainties.
  • Affinity with and passion for technology application.
  • Understanding of development concepts and economic, commercial, organizational or political (ECOP) issues associated with exploration opportunities.
  • Intellectual integrity and honesty in subsurface evaluation are key elements of this position.
  • Self-starter with drive, energy and initiative.
  • Strong demonstrable inter-personal coaching skills.
  • Evidence of passion for HSSE & HSSE leadership
