Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Regional Geologist works in Exploration New Opprotunities team (XEO). The person may take on the role of play owner / project lead which may involve leading an informal team of 2-3 explorers and a wider network of part-time resources. As one of the senior members of the Evaluation teams, he/she will be accountable for:

  • Grow Exploration s Undefined Portfolio by the use of Play Based Exploration techniques.
  • Grow Exploration s Defined Portfolio by identification and maturation of opportunities to an agreed and fully risked Approved Lead status.
  • Increasing the understanding of regional Petroleum Geology aspects of Block 6.
  • Generation and characterization of new plays, and updating understanding of existing plays, compiled in play maps and regional evaluation reports (X-ORP Step 1).
  • Generation of a lead portfolio in a play context (X-ORP Step 2).
  • Post-drill well evaluationsm and inclusion of results in play updates (X-ORP Step 5).
  • Review, develop and expand the Yet-to-Find and lead/prospect portfolio.
  • Ensure the objective and auditable quantification / risking of undefined to defined resource potential.
  • Provision of data to support the well and seismic planning sequence as defined by the exploration business cycle.
  • Coordinate the studies carried out within XD and the Field Development Centre which relate to improvement of play understanding and/or specific well related analyses.
  • Propose, coordinate and execute, directly or supported by 3rd parties, longer term (strategic) seismic acquisition and reprocessing activities and actively pursue studies and new technologies, which maximise growth opportunities, increase efficiency and/or reduce costs.
  • Ensure effective handover of new opportunities to respective Exploration evaluation team.
  • Coordinate and align activities with those of Exploration s evaluation teams as required.
  • Development of competence and confidence of junior explorers. PDO exploration has an excellent track record of on-the-job coaching. Good communication and coaching skills are vital for enjoyment, fulfillment & success.
  • Provide quality control of team output and databases, and identify data management improvement initiatives.
  • Provide proactive technical advice and assistance across exploration development within and outside the team.
  • Use expertise in own specialist area to raise the quality of evaluations and Geosciences.

All activities will be executed within the PDO HSSE framework with no impact to people or the environment.

Desired Candidate Profile

Proven track record in Exploration Geosciences and Seismic Interpretation is essential. The position requires strong technical and analytical skills, and the ability to communicate geological issues to other team members and stakeholders. PDO Exploration has a large contingent of junior Omani staff, and it is expected that the successful candidate has a track record and passion for coaching. Specifically:

  • Degree or Postgraduate training (M.Sc./PhD) in Geology/Geophysics or related science with minimum of 10 years of regional experience.
  • Workstation-based multi volume seismic /geological interpretation at both play and prospect scales.
  • Well-rounded Geoscientist experienced in all aspects of play-based evaluation concepts demonstrating their ability to rapidly analyze and identify critical success factors, then focusing on these to efficiently develop the opportunity.
  • Demonstrated capability to generate new play concepts in both mature and under-explored exploration settings.
  • Breadth of experience sufficient enough to explore in a wide variety of stratigraphies, sedimentologies & structural and stratigraphic trap domains.
  • Ability to collaborate with experts to integrate information from a variety of disciplines (specialist geology to petroleum engineering) into a consistent subsurface model, highlighting key risks and uncertainties.
  • Petroleum systems (fluid prediction) knowledge would be a advantage.
  • Affinity with and passion for technology application.
  • Intellectual integrity and honesty in subsurface evaluation are key elements of this position.
  • Self-starter with creative Geological thinking and commitment to quality.
  • Strong demonstrable inter-personal skills: coaching, mentorship, team player.
