Roles & Responsibilities
Overview
Design, develop, and oversee the implementation of railway signalling systems to control and manage the safe movement of trains.
Your role
- Leading the design of signalling systems including trackside equipment, wayside equipment, signal room equipment and control room equipment.
- Technical management of train control system projects executed by vendors.
- System design to meet for operational capacity and project functionality requirements.
- Integration of Train Control & Signalling System design into Stations, Stops, Traction Power Sub-stations, Maintenance & Storage facilities and Control Centres in accordance with Project requirements.
- Working with the System Design teams, other Domain teams and the Requirements Management team within the Rail Control Systems Directorate on specification and delivery of these various Train.
- Control & Signalling Systems into overall rail and mass transit project solutions.
- Interfacing with design groups (communications, fixed facilities, etc.) and with external team members (architects, code consultants, AHJs, major suppliers, etc.).
- Component, sub-system and system procurement (technical specifications, vendor selections, post-award support, etc.).
- Delivery of DesignConstruction and Interface Control documentation.
- Interaction with Operations and Maintenance team.
- Support of construction and installation activities in the field.
- Support for Test & Commissioning and setting to work of mass transit, urban rail and heavy freight signalling and control systems.
- Assistance with customer staff training.
- Assistance with the generation of O&M Manuals.
- Design of complete railway signalling systems, including trackside, wayside, signal room, and control room equipment.
- Design and configuration of Computer-Based Interlocking (CBI) application software.
- Technical management of vendor-delivered train control and signalling system projects.
- Integration of train control and signalling systems with stations, traction power substations, depots, and control centres.
- Coordination with internal design, domain, and requirements teams, as well as external stakeholders (communications, architecture, AHJs, suppliers).
- Procurement and documentation support, including technical specifications, vendor selection, and design/construction/interface control documentation.
- Support through construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and operational handover, including interaction with operations and maintenance teams.
- Extensive experience designing and selecting train control and signalling system components, with conventional signalling as a prerequisite.
- Proven expertise across multiple train control technologies (ETCS, ATC, CBTC, PTC), grade crossings, and CBI platforms.
- Experience integrating train control systems into transit facilities, vehicles, and multidisciplinary project environments.
- Strong documentation skills, including preparation of design drawings, technical requirements, and specifications.
- Design and develop signalling systems including track circuits, axle counters, interlockings, level crossings, and platform screen door interfaces.
- Prepare, check, and review signalling design drawings, circuit diagrams, schematics, and technical specifications in accordance with applicable standards.
- Conduct independent design verification checks to ensure compliance with signalling design specifications and railway standards (EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, CENELEC).
- Perform functional safety analysis including FMEA, FTA, and Hazard Identification (HAZID) as part of the safety assurance process.
- Liaise with civil, traction power, telecommunications, and rolling stock teams to resolve interface issues and ensure design coordination.
- Review and comment on contractor design submittals, shop drawings, and method statements for technical compliance.
- Conduct site inspections and provide technical support during signalling installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
- Develop and review signalling-related test procedures, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
- Troubleshoot signalling faults during construction and commissioning; provide technical guidance to site teams and maintenance personnel.
- Maintain accurate records of design changes, non-conformances, and design decisions throughout the project lifecycle.
- Contribute to the development and review of Operations & Maintenance (O&M) manuals and as-built documentation.
Key Competencies
- Proficiency in relay-based and computer-based interlocking systems.
- Knowledge of CENELEC railway standards and SIL requirements.
- Experience with signalling design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, CADD).
- Familiarity with CBTC systems is advantageous.
