Job Description
Roles & Responsibilities
The Senior Manufacturing Test Engineer Battery will play a lead role in developing, launching, and sustaining automated test systems for Lucid s high voltage battery module and battery pack manufacturing lines. This role is central to EV energy storage validation and focuses on in process and end of line (EOL) testing to ensure safety, performance, reliability, and traceability of battery systems. The engineer will work closely with Design Engineering, Controls, Quality, Production, and external equipment suppliers to deliver robust, scalable, and data driven test solutions.
You Will:
- Review and approve battery test specifications and change requests from design engineering, acting as the manufacturing test authority for battery cells (as applicable), modules, and packs.
- Analyze and provide feedback on test sequences, limits, cycle time, process flow, and failure mode handling for battery EOL and sub assembly test stations.
- Design and own test system hardware for battery testing, including system layout, cabinet and rack design, HV/LV routing, connectorization, shielding, grounding, and thermal considerations for high energy systems.
- Develop modular and scalable test applications with clear operator interfaces for battery testing, including test sequencing, parameter management, fault messaging, and data logging.
- Implement databases to manage battery test parameters, serial level results, genealogy, and traceability across modules and packs.
- Define DUT handling, fixturing, and electrical/mechanical interfaces for battery test stations, including automated connections and high voltage safety interlocks.
- Collaborate with controls engineers to integrate test applications with station PLCs, material handling systems, and safety systems, including responses to electrical, thermal, and safety critical failure modes.
- Lead sourcing, RFQs, supplier selection, build tracking, and technical oversight for externally supplied battery test equipment.
- Develop and execute commissioning and validation plans for battery test systems, including GR&R, red rabbit units, fault injection, and simulation of electrical, thermal, and communication failures.
- Launch battery test systems into production and provide on floor support during ramp, including limit tuning, yield improvement, and false fail reduction.
- Train maintenance and operations teams on battery test station operation, error recovery, and safe troubleshooting of high voltage systems.
- Partner with factory data and analytics teams to enable battery test data visualization, yield tracking, degradation analysis, and long term quality monitoring.
Desired Candidate Profile
You Bring:
- Bachelor s, Master s, or PhD degree in Engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, or similar preferred).
- 5+ years of experience developing and launching automated test equipment in high volume manufacturing environments.
- Direct experience testing EV battery modules or battery packs in a manufacturing or production setting.
- Strong understanding of high voltage battery systems, including safety requirements, insulation resistance, hipot testing, and energy storage hazards.
- Hands on experience with battery EOL and in process testing such as OCV, IR, charge/discharge testing, contactor and pre charge validation, BMS communication, temperature sensing, and leak or pressure testing (where applicable).
- Detailed knowledge of electrical and electronic components, HV connectors, cables, busbars, shielding, and grounding best practices.
- Ability to design electrical schematics using AutoCAD, EPLAN, or equivalent tools.
- Experience developing test hardware using National Instruments platforms such as PXI, cDAQ, or cRIO.
- Strong software development experience with NI LabVIEW, NI TestStand, Python, MATLAB, or similar tools used in manufacturing test environments.
- Working knowledge of automotive and battery communication protocols including CAN, CAN FD, LIN, and battery specific diagnostics via BMS interfaces.
- Proficiency using electrical test equipment such as power supplies, electronic loads, oscilloscopes, DMMs, power analyzers, and battery cyclers.
- Experience interfacing test systems with PLCs and industrial networks such as Ethernet/IP or OPC UA is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple battery test stations, suppliers, and launch timelines in parallel.
- Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, production, quality, and external suppliers.
